Hi guys,

Apologies that there are already loads of these threads but I need to tap into your knowledge.

My current rig is:

AMD Phenom 2 550 3.1G
Gigabyte MA770T-UD3P Motherboard
4GB Ram
GTX460
And a few of the normal bits and bobs.

I want a small upgrade (Motherboard, CPU, RAM) as i'm not a heavy heavy gamer and am happy with the GPU, and will most probably swap it into the new rig for now. I have £300 or there abouts to spend.

I would prefer to move over to an Intel based system, but would consider the right AMD based system. I am happy to temporarily skimp on the processor, with the right board to expand that later on - as long as the processor gives me a reasonably noticeable upgrade on what I have now.

Can you help me please?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £173.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £84.98
1 x Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CML8GX3M2A1600C9) £39.95
Total : £310.32 (includes shipping : £9.50).

That's about it really. It's a little over with the shipping.

Can probably re-use the ram if it's DDR3, and get a better motherboard. Then sell your components, and get 8GB later.

That's a nice lil ivybridge mobo bundle for you. The CPU can be overclocked and the mobo has the ability to do so. It also has lucid MVP which will boost the GPUs performance.

Technically you dont need the RAM as you could reuse what you have. Although i am running the AMD 555BE as a HTPC so you might like to keep your old mobo bundle to reuse for that purpose later :)

If we can get you to 100 posts you qualify for free delivery. So ask questions, fill us in on more of your kit (what PSU etc) and we can lose that nasty P&P ;)

Many thanks guys. I had been looking at the i5 after browsing around but was unsure on what Motherboard and what speed of RAM to get.

@honosuseri. Thanks for that info about the shipping but there is no need. I live about 5 mins drive away from the shop so can collect on my way home from work.

Cheers!

Call me Hono fella......save your keyboard keys if nothing else lol

The RAM we suggested is 1600mhz, which is all you need. What brand we spec depends on price really i.e the weekly or daily offers. We often suggest low profile RAM, the stuff with the aggressive looking heatspreaders can be a pain when you try and fit large aftermarket heatsinks.

On that note would you like to overclock? We can spec some budget heatsinks (£20ish) for you to help tame the temps and get you more bang for your buck from the CPU. This will take you over budget slightly obviously :(

That's a bonus you live so close. Good luck with the build, I hope it's trouble free but if you have any hiccups you know where to find us if you get stuck :)

hono,

Thanks for that. Overclocking. I have a confession to make here in that i've never done it on any build i've done. I've always ran at stock. I wouldn't mind a go at it sometime, but genuinely wouldn't know where to start... :(

Any suggestions on the cooler etc would be gratefully received.
