I have just upgrade to an Intel 2500k & AsRock Extreme 7 Gen 3 and all is working well except when I boot with my external drive connected.

I get error code 64 which according to the website is a chipset issue. If I disconnect the external HDD, it boots with no issues at all.

Would a BIOS update be in order?

The os is in on my SSD and can get in and use the pc fine if I don't connect my external drive. Once im in to the OS, i can connect it and see/use everything that is on the drive fine.

The problems when booting with my external drive connected, it shows a debug error 64.

The debug error seems to relate to a chipset issue and I'm not even getting errors like you would f you attempted to boot to a non bootable device.

Worth a shot.

How old is the USB drive?

I have similar issues with my board when using older USB devices. My joystick is about 11 years old and uses USB 1 / 1.1. I have the same proble as you, the computer won't boot with it plugged in. It has done it across 2 different motherboards.

I think its only 1 year or so and is usb3 compatible.

That was interesting.

Updated the BIOS and once the PC had booted in to the OS, i connected my External HDD on the front panel of my case.

PC shuts down!

Disconnect external HDD and PC boots fine.

Is this drive a bit shot?

Another questions: Would it be possible that the drive has a potential wiring issue, meaning there is some volts passing through the USB cable which is why I get the debug error?
