Upgrade help

Long time OC buyer here.

I'm planning on upgrading my PC as i feel its getting a tad old I currently have i7-7700k and a 2080s I am planning on keeping my 2080s as its just fine for what I play for the moment WoW + Space Engineers. I'm looking to upgrade MOBO + RAM + CPU + CPU FAN my last upgrade I believe was 2017 or 2018 so it will be a fairly decent one I am looking at the AMD 9 7900X3D as it says its good for doing some rendering for 3d? But I've also found a lot cheaper a i7-13700K. ( I like cheaper ) Which seems to be maybe better? I don't really want to spend a huge amount for all the upgrades like i said all i play is wow and space engineers so I'm looking no more than £600 ( doesn't mean hit it ) If it helps I'm getting a Dell Oled ultra wide but I don't think it will effect CPU usage or anything?

Any suggestions on a build with just MOBO+RAM+CPU+CPU FAN no more than £600 please will it be amd or intel? Does 3d amd worth it?

if any suggestions on something cheaper and comparable to Alienware 34 Curved QD-OLED Gaming Monitor - AW3423DWF that would also be much appreciated

How much 3D rendering do you do? Since the 7900X3D is a small chunk slower than the 7800X3D in games, I'd only take that option if the price is close and the rendering is important to you. Note that many apps use the GPU more than the CPU for these tasks and that is likely to only get more true over time.

The 13700k/14700K have good productivity performance (which productivity apps do you use?), but they also have higher full load power draw, higher cooling requirements and we don't know if they are fixed yet. Personally, I'm not interested in these CPUs anymore (why take the risk?) and since you play a lot of WoW having an X3D makes sense. If you do buy a 13th-14th gen CPU, the K CPUs have an extended warranty (5 year), only if they're retail boxed, so I'd recommend avoiding tray CPUs.

WoW likes X3D CPUs, as do many MMOs.


The 13700k/14700K have good productivity performance (which productivity apps do you use?), but they also have higher full load power draw, higher cooling requirements and we don't know if they are fixed yet. I don't know if its multitasking but i have 2 monitors and will contine having 2. I usually this is a game i.e WoW + youtube, netflix, a lot of edge tabs ect...

sorry I miss spoke I've been told it helps the GPU with gaming

8 core CPU would be fine with that.

There are very few games that meaningfully use 12 cores and the problem with the 7900X3D is that it only has the cache across 6 of the cores (whereas the 7800X3D is across all 8).

Not easy to get an X3D CPU for that price, I'm £30 over your budget. Hopefully there will be some deals that cut the price (it has gone up A LOT).

thank you for your help much interesting the differences between the 2 amd i'll be waiting before black friday before I buy anything but it looks awesome just watching the video very strange to see the 7800 beat the 7900 on most bits :D

Any chance there is a ATX board instead of micro worried it won't fit in 2080s with space

more than happy to be slightly over budget if this is going to last another 4-5 years when I usually upgrade

What cooler do you have at the moment because you may be able to reuse it or get a bracket for AM5?

I am with Tetras with regards to 13th/14th gen Intel and would avoid them like the plague no matter how cheap they are. In fact I was already on that platform with a 12th gen i5 12600 and with only potentially faulty cpu's to upgrade to I ditched the paltform and switched to AMD's AM5 with a 7800x3d and am very glad I did because it is a fantastic cpu.

The new 7800X3D looks very good, 20% better than the non X3D version, but the chip is pretty expensive. and impossible to buy. For gaming, AMD is the one to get.

Asrock Steel Legend 650E looks good, wish I bought one instead of the PG Riptide (due to the optical digital out)

Msi 341CQP is back down to £600​

Which is what I got mine for​

The increase to £900 was ridiculous

Might get a drop on that on black Friday too If lucky
The dwf price constantly goes on special offers
And if you can get a student, NHS,dell employee etc
Discount then it's probably still
Worth looking at
Though I would probably want it down to
£500--£550 personally now it's an older model

This is the cheapest one they sell @ OCUK, but on pre-order at the moment:

It has 3x M.2 slots (1 is PCIE 5.0) and plenty of USB ports (though mostly USB2), but note the 1Gb LAN, whereas most boards are 2.5 Gb.
 
I've completed the build so far looks like *no competitors* i've added most of my bit that I will be reusing thank you everyone for the help and advice. let hope OC have some of them on blackfriday offers :D
