Hi,

I stumbled upon these forums whilst trying to research various components and as I have been out of the system building game for about 5 years I figured its probably a good place to start.

I built my current system approx 5 yrs ago if my memory is right. It is still up and running and doing a good job but lately its been sluggish and I would rather get a new one than try and reinstall windows etc again.

Where possible I would like to re-use components:

Current system:
evga nforce 680i
OCZ vendetta
Pentium e6600
2gb of OCZ ram (not sure specific name, but its DDR2 with two huge heatpipes on each)
gigbyte aurora 3d case
OCZ gamextreme 850w (This replaced the original 650 OCZ gamextreme which broke)
BFG nvidia geforce GTX 260
SB X-FI
1 X SATA 360g HDD (the other one has kinda broken)

What I am in the market for is:
  • Motherboard (approx £100 - £200)
  • Processor (approx £100 - £200)
  • Hard disk (SDD) (Seen some second hand vertex 3`s for £60)
  • CPU cooler (potentially if OCZ Vendetta doesnt fit?) (£60 max?)
  • GPU (Or is a 260GTX sufficient?) (?? really out of touch with prices)

As my current board is an EVGA and I have had only good experiences I am slightly leaning towards another EVGA - however if there are better ones (Sabertooth?) in similar price range id look at those.

The processor I have in mind is an I5 2500k or the I5 3750 ivy (I think thats right... from what I gather the ivy is better?)

Id like to reuse the case and GPU if possible, along with the PSU and CPU cooler (although I realise it may not fit). I think the current bottleneck on my system is the CPU and or motherboard - as well as the DDR2 ram.

I have added in an SSD because I would put the operating system on that. I use XP although have a feeling I may need to join the rest of the world and upgrade to windows 7 at some point..

I play games in 2560 x 1600 resolution on a 30 inch monitor so as long as the new system does that its a tick in a box.

Feedback / advice and product suggestions welcomed.

Regards

You can reuse the GPU though it will be getting to the end of its useful life but may be worth upgrading the rest and see if your happy, its not like GPU prices are going to rise.
If your staying with XP remember that 32 bit is limited to 4Gb of RAM so now would be a good time to make the leap.

Ivy is a bit better than sandy but not enough to get people to upgrade from sandy.

Cooler may work some of them fit others dont, you get the intel stock cooler so you can try it and get a cooler later if needs be.

Cheers guys -gives me some food for thought and somewhere to aim.

Main bits are the cpu, mobo and ram and both suggestions give me an idea of the type of things to look for so I appreciate the feedback =)
