Ok, my current spec is this:

Athlon 64 3200+ Venice
ASUS A8V Deluxe WiFi (not bothered with the WiFi though)
WD Raptor 74Gig 10K
Seagate 120Gig IDE
Maxtor 80Gig IDE
BFG 7900 GS OC AGP
NEC 6550 DVDRW
Corsair XMS Pro 3200C2TP (2x512)

Now what should I change on this setup to make this machine considerably faster?

I manily use this system for gaming and have since started backing up my DVD collect to disk. which has been taking forever.

Im not worried about storage on this machine though as I have 2x500Gig disks in a file server I recently built. With 2 more on the way!

How about...
  • GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS3 (GE2GB3200BDC) £139.99
  • AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego (Socket 939) - OEM £54.99
  • Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940) £13.99
  • Sub Total : £208.97
  • Shipping : £8.00
  • Vat : £37.97
  • Total : £254.94
Though, ideally you should look for a Dual-Core chip. Anything from a 4200+ should do

"considerably faster?", not a lot tbh, considering what graphics card you already have and being stuck with agp you can't really do much gpu wise, at best you can slot in 4400+ cpu but I still would'nt call that a considerable difference as even dual core still does'nt add much to gaming these days, the extra memory will help make your system feel smoother but it won't make it any faster, even if the ram has better timings etc the performance increase will be negligeble, I'd have to reccomend you selling your currunt system, (you should get a good price for the 7900GS) and upgrade to a core duo system, I'm only saying this as I feel your looking for an upgrade where by your really going to feel the difference and I think your be dissapointed if you upgrade your currunt system.

without going PCIE and C2D theres not a lot of point... you could overclock your current system and save yourself money. 2gb of ram is a waste as your better off making do as its all DDR2 now.

I disgaree, he could get a Conroe E6300 and an Asrock 775DUAL-VSTA motherboard skt775 VIA PT880 1066FSB PCI-E AGP 8x SATA.

That gives him AGP and PCIE slots on the same board, plus DDR1 and DDR2 ram slots... the board only costs about 40 pounds, and along with the CPU it will cost him about 160 in total.

He could then buy ram in the future. One thing though, OCUK dont sell the board, and so we cant post links to it, so you wioll have to find it by yourself!

If the OP'er is on a very tight budget then this is a good idea :).

bluestreak101, if you want to give us a budget to work with then we will be able to help you out a little more.

Budgets a tough one. I shouldn't really have bought the 7900, was a last minute thing. I want to move over to PCI-E but if I do im looking at buying a whole new setup at once! which is a lot.

The spec im looking at to completely move over is this:

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail £215.01
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500C5 TwinX (2x1GB) - £264.36
BFG nForce 680 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - £182.11
BFG GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail - £399.49

Total: £1060.97

I would keep the other components:

WD Raptor
NEC DVDRW
Enermax Noisetaker 485W
CMStacker
(The other Hard disks are now obsolete with my file sever in action)

The reasons behind going for such a powerful machine is im not going to be looking in upgrading again for a while, with the exception of maybe a second Raptor possibly.

Reasons behind wanting a quick upgrade to current machine is its going to take a cpl of months to get the money for that spec

If you can better that spec for the same or less (would have to be considerably less) then let me know!
