I currently have an ancient build I did around 2013-2014. I am thinking of upgrading but as low cost as possible.

Currently Cpu: AMD FX-6300 Black edition
Ram: 16gb DDR3
Graphics: had a R9 270x 2gb but then moved to a Gtx 1050ti

Idea 1: just upgrade to an FX-8350 Black Edition (£35)

Idea 2 upgrade as follows:
CPU: R7 3700X (£70) then in a 1 year or 2 to 5800x3D
Mobo: MSI B450-A Pro Max II (£74) Ram: Patriot Viper Steel 3200mhz (2x16gb) (£45)
Probably add a cpu cooler for about (£15)

Will use the current psu (550W or 650W bronze)

Use is just day to day use and play a few online games, like GW2, was thinking of trying out New World but will see all in 1080p for now.

Or would there be a better AM5 system I could build?

Also I am not picking items from Overclockers shop, let me know if that’s ok or delete the post if not.

Thanks

Hi and welcome.

Upgrade wise depends on budget but a decent upgrade would be a 5600 which can be had new for £90 with a cooler.

A b550 motherboard would be better as that would offer pcie4.

As long as you don't say or even hint at who the competitor is, it shouldn't be a problem :)

I'd get off the bulldozer architecture if you have the budget for it. AM4 is still a great platform especially with an X3D at some point.

this would be a massive upgrade over what you have, i would grab a 5600 for about the same price as the 3700x

Wow bulldozer! I had an FX9590 for a while, served me well but in 2025 I think it might be time to jump ship to AM4 at very least!

You could go for a bundle, or perhaps import (e.g. 7400F/7500F), but not sure it makes the most sense in your situation.

Here is a cheap Intel option that performs well (beats the 3700X in games, overall).

It also doesn't need a cooler (bundled in the CPU box).
