Hi,

I've had my current motherboard and CPU for a year now, its a full size ATX in a Corsair 540 Air and I only use one GPU so I'm considering downsizing to a Mini ATX type of case and motherboard but only if the performance increase is worth it for the cost of changing motherboard, CPU, memory, cooler and case

What would you recommend to see a significant increase in gaming performance?

Or the other alternative is to overclock, its running completely standard at the moment

My GPU is a 970 and its purely a gaming machine

Thanks

What is your budget? :)

Then we can compare potential increased bang relative to your current set up.

What resolution do you play at?

Currently 1920x1080 on a 120hz monitor, I'll be looking at a higher res monitor later in 2015

Budget wise I would say around £100/£150 for the motherboard, no more than £180 for the CPU. Memory I'm at a complete loss with at the moment as I dont know where everything stands with DDR4 etc

Ok thanks, so why ddr3 and not 4?

I thought that would be the suggested CPU so I'm going to look at some benchmarks between the two in some more detail

To save money I could install to my current case for a little while and more to a smaller case a little later on

Because your budget is not large enough to go with the X99 platform (which supports DDR4) and, you are not doing anything with your computer that warrants going to that platform/CPU/DDR4.

Yes, you can put it all in your old case. :)

Oh my what a terrible waste of money !

OP.

Your existing CPU is more than good enough for your needs. I assume you have overclocked it yes?

Don't waste your money side stepping, do it right. Spend all of your budget on GPUs because going from an 8350 to a I5 will actually lose you performance in certain apps. Games wise? they really don't care. Just stick to what you have.

Upping the resolution makes the call for the CPU even less.

Buy a decent cooler (H105, H110, H100i etc) and then buy another GTX 970.

the only place i'd personally go from a well clocked 8350 is to x79/x99.

as more games are coming with decent (4+) threading the 8350 will be a good cpu for the money.

Moving to X79/99 is only worth it if you are after everything but gaming. In gaming the FX 8 is more than good enough. Boring, but true.

The CPU is actually one of the least important parts of a gaming rig now. 8gb memory is a must for any modern game, as is plenty of GPU muscles. And as time goes on that will become more and more true.

Mantle, DX12,HSA etc all aim to eliminate the CPU completely. Why? because the new consoles have really lame CPUs running even more lame clock speeds.

AMD played it smart with the consoles, choosing more cores at lower clock speeds is forcing engines/games to go multithreaded. game devs can't just rely on 1 or 2 very fast threads anymore if they want to port to the masses (consoles)

they're making the FX's a worthwhile option, and i dare say that for gaming, the FX-8 will last as long as a quad core i7.

AMD wanted to sell M$ and $ony the cheapest solution possible. That's probably why they got the contract tbh, so working away now on Mantle and HSA is their way of making sure their lower powered CPU, yet, pretty decent little onboard GPU number can get the job done.

M$ will use DX12, which will be much of the same thing. All of it filters down to us and tbh? for once it's actually something useful. Now a PC builder can save him/herself £100 on a CPU and spend more on the graphics cards.

Which is nice. :)

I've decided I'm keeping and started toying around with over clocking it

Thanks

Save your cash for a year or two when the FX may actually struggle. Then go with whatever your cash can get next time round, will be a jump in realistic performance.
