Upgrade itch or wait

Looking to upgrade my trusty I5 2500K rig soon™ as the upgrade itch has gotten hold of me...

I recently upgraded my case to a Phantek Primo, added a 480gb ssd to the 128gb ssd that I already had.

This rig has lasted me a fair while and I'd like the next one to do roughly the same. Do I upgrade the board/CPU and Ram now or do I hold off 6 months or so and wait for skylake??

Any advice would be appreciated. Machine is used for gaming and not much else.. Got about 600 to spend but would be a bit more come skylake release time.

Skylakes release date may be delayed till 2016. But there's no telling what will happen, guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Personally, id keep what you have and perhaps upgrade the videocard? But then again 300 series seem to be just around the corner... Might be a good idea to save up?

Got 2 x 280x crossfire atm and they do ok. Have a 3rd to add from another machine if I get a compatible board and suddenly need to increase the gfx side.

Don't buy a new motherboard just to use the same processor and/or to add in a third graphics card... no point, might as well get a new chip and ram as well... waste of money

I would stick you what you have now and wait for new tech to be released over the next couple of months... if you are having an itch, get some more ram, maybe a new ssd as well...

Think I'll be waiting to see what skylake and the next generation of boards are going to be like. My trusty 2500k has lasted me a few years and I'd like the next cpu to be similar..

Is there any benefit from getting an I7 over an I5 for gaming ? I know very few games utilise the multithreading but going forward do we think an I7 will be better than an I5 ? Don't mind saving extra if its going to be of more benefit in the long run..

I am still happily using my overclocked 2500k and can't see the point in changing it for a while yet. There have only been tiny improvements with every generation since. No point at all.

The only upgrades I've done lately are to storage. Another 3tb storage drive added and a new evo 850 250gb ssd.

What cooler are you running? Try and get above 4.2ghz or even if you wanted grab a used 2600k, 2700k or 3770k but this isn't strictly speaking necessary either!

Got a big noctua... probably could clock it some more... TBH I think I took the overclock off a while ago as was having bios issues.. so need to check that.

Was just wondering whether to spend the extra for an I7 on the next upgrade if people this that more developers will begin to utilise the features..

Same here. Unless there's another big jump in performance, I can't see the need for upgrading any time soon.
