Upgrade Itch...

Noon,

I'm getting the upgrade itch, thinking about selling off my XFX 5970 Black Edition for two XFX 6950 XXX.

Couple of questions 1st:

1) Are these unlockable to the 6970?

2) Would how much heat/noise would these produce?

3) Pointless upgrade?

I've had a look at comparisons on Anandtech and they seem quite nice but seem even better when done with the 6970's. I'll be gaming at 1080p.

I think you need the cards with 2gb of onboard memory in order to have the possibility of an unlock to a 6970

i dont think its worth upgrading to be hounest that card is crazy still, flag ship awesomeness.

wait for the new ones later on this year

as for the unlock im not sure if the 1gb ones unlock 2gb ones garrenteed

unlocking may be 'guaranteed' but stability isn't

I have my 6950 unlocked to 6970 and overclocked to the 6970 stock 880, 1375. It was very easy to do and I highly recommend them!

As mentioned by Andrei23, it's guaranteed to unlock, but whether it will be stable is another question. Similarly, only the 2GB versions unlock

Question to ask yourself is, is your HD5970 struggling, and can you be bothered with the driver problems normally associated with multi-GPU setups?

I'd suggest something like an SSD if you HAVE to spend the money.

Depends on your resolution. If you're gaming at 1920x1080 then I don't think its worthwhile upgrading at all.

Unless it's struggling I'd stay put. As suggested, maybe think of something else that could do with a cash injection.

The 5970 is pretty good anyway isn't it?! Doesn't seem like much of an upgrade. Better waiting till the next gen cards come out as they won't be made on 40nm production

7000 series coming november or later.
Performance for price will be pretty good because of new architecture
