At the moment i have an i7 3770K @ 4.0, and an MSI Mpower Z77 board, but can't fight the itch to upgrade, my chip isn't very good at overclocking and i also want to change the color scheme, i want black and white, not yellow :p

My CPU is De-lidded, also want to futurerproof it a bit more.

what socket is the only real step forward?

I'll also be doing a full custom watercooling loop, and would rather get new hardware than W/C what i have!

Only real step forward is x79 6core, I'd just keep what you got, you've got a good setup, shame you don't like the colour scheme as the Mpower is a fantastic board *cough* Mpower owner here *cough*

Don't waste your money mate, you see very very slight perf upgrading to Z87/X79

Woow, you really want to upgrade from a 3770k? xD The only way which others have suggested is the Ivy Bridge-E setup or Haswell 4770k, which doesn't really add much or any performance at all (the 4770k)

3770k to a hw 4770k would offer very little increase in performance. Done this a while back, only because my 3770k wasnt a great clocker.

When you say your current chip isnt a good clocker, whats the most youve had it running stable at and what sort of voltage?

Well when i bought the mobo it had a OC profile which was 4.4 with 1.4V, maybe it's just me and i can't overclock lol :p

Tried loads but then just left it at 4.4 as it felt like a good spot on the chip.

1.4v is a bit on the high side, did you ever try lowering the voltage a bit? Ill be honest, my own wasnt a great chip either. 1.34v @4.5ghz and still not fully stable.

I managed to get down to 1.32 for 4.2, anything higher than 4.2 crashed the system :(

*Shh, I can post the pound coin*

Meh, anyway, could you just re-use most of your components like the RAM and such?
