So i have a pretty cheap MSI h61m-P31 (g3) board. With a 2500k running on it.

Now i cant OC my 2500k on this board which is a bummer and my ram runs at 1333 not the rated 1600 as the board need a i5/i7 3 series cpu for higher than 1333 on this board.

would a upgrade to a z77 second hand board make any difference with a oc on my 2500k, or should i sell the 2500k and get a non k 3770?

rest of my pc is a eVGA 980sc, 8gb corsair vengence ram and 2x240gb ssds

But you can increase the multiplier on it to OC the CPU? If so I'd do that and not worry too much about the memory only working at 1333, as long as it's running in dual channel. Will have hardly any effect on performance.

If you find a cheap mobo upgrade though and can be bothered to swap then why not.

i can increase the multi to 37.... but it doesnt go to 3.7 at all, the turbo or whatever its called stops at 3.4 it seems.

just thought maybe throwing a 3770 non k may help as selling the 2500k would offset some of the cost.

thanks for the advice on memory. One day i will afford slightly better parts ha

To be honest a 3770 isn't going to be that much better than the 2500K at stock. You'll gain HT, 2MB of cache and a few hundred MHz of clock speed.

If you can find a decent Z77 board for reasonable money it should still be cheaper than a 3770. Being able to overclock that 2500K to over 4GHz will make a bigger difference for less money so that'd be my suggestion.

Of course if you can't find a Z77 board for reasonable money but can find a 3770 for a good price then that would be worthwhile. All down to what you're able to get :)

Least its cool and quiet at stock!

Just was a thought to sell the 2500k and shouldnt be much difference to a 3770 non k.

Its all about timing a good deal i guess :)

Honestly, while it is a waste to have a K-series processor in such a board, it absolutely isn't worth spending good money on to rectify. Keep what you have, and possibly pick up a used higher end board in a while at a low cost.

Yeah i got the board and cpu for £100 for both so was quite happy.

Maybe worth just saving for 4/5 months to move to 5820k and a board? Do it properly!
