Hi All

Well i got a bit of a duff with my i5 2500k as its not the best overclocker in the world. So i fancy a new CPU, What would you suggest ? I do use FSX that is CPUI depandant specs below. needs to be the same socket. Looking for a good overclock too. Budget upto £200

2700k ?

2700k isn't 200 quid though, it's 220.
May's well get an i5 3570k as for FSX you need the IPC performance.

Not really worth it for the price though. Not sure what 2500K would go for 2nd hand, but I think you'd be paying a bit more than the upgrade would be worth. Might get a better clocker though.

I'd go for the 2700K if it were me. You'd get the same performance in FSX (although you might get a better chip), but at least you'd have better performance in multi-threaded applications.

FSX isn't that heavily threaded from what I gather, if I recall it's a single core game, so the 2700k won't do anything, he needs to improve his core for core performance, which to do so he'd need to get a better clocking 2500k, or getting a 3570k and hoping that clocks acceptably too.

Plus, due to the IPC improvements with Ivybridge, however small, the gap between 2600k/2700k and the i5 3570k aren't great http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/287?vs=701

Bearing in mind OP will have a cooler, an OEM i5 3570k costs 161 quid against the 220 of the 2700k.
Actual upgrade to that OEM 3570k would be about 45 quid.

Certainly not worth the extra for the 2700k, at least in my opinion.

Cheers for the feedback. the £200 is not set in stone could do £250 if the benefits wherr there. FSX is pretty much single core as far as i was aware however it does support and load the other cores slightly but its minimal. I do have a water cooler (only a cheapy) but seems to work ok.

just how bad a clocker is your 2500k? if its the chip in your sig 4.6ghz aint exactly slow

My suggestion was based on the premise that there isn't anything that will really offer you a great improvement in FSX (unless it was a better clocking chip), so if you want to upgrade you may as well spend money on something that will improve performance of other applications, while offering the same coin toss on overclocking performance that an i5 chip would.

I understand the points Martini is making, but I wouldn't even bother spending £45 overall on this increase in performance

I would at least want my upgrade to show genuine improvements in the rest of my PC's performance, which hyperthreading would help with.

Overall, I would say there isn't anything that is going to really feel like a big upgrade, but if you really have the itch I'd lean towards an i7 just to make it feel more worthwhile, because the gains in FSX are going to be minimal whichever route you take.

Also, that's very true^^^ 4.6GHz is about right, and I wouldn't necessarily count on anything better from an ivybridge chip, so you may end up breaking even.

its at 4.4 at the moment as at 4.6 it just would not stay stable on sensible voltages. i guess the 2500k is still pretty good even though its now getting on a bit.

I'm in the same boat to be fair. I was playing FC3 last night and watching my cpu pushing 85% usage across all cores and I thought "christ, is my chip getting old?". Lo and behold I've had it nearly 2 years! But there isn't anything significantly better for the same price range. I paid £180 for my 2500K 2 years ago, and if I spent the same again now, I'd get a very small IPC bump. Not worth it yet IMO

Think that's more a poor coded game :p

Ha! Yeah I hope so! But I do feel like we're getting to the stage where a mid-range cpu is going to feel some limitations in the next year. But where to go from there? It's a bit like the 5850 owners who were waiting for something as good value to come up. I think it's easy to get spoilt by good tech!

Well there's plenty of room in 200 odd GPU arena, I mean I's say a 5850 - 7950 was a worth while upgrade, and pretty much mirrored the original 5850 pricing (At least, occasionally, I got two 7950's at 207 quid each)

CPU's are a bit touch and go, but I can barely get my 2500k to ramp up when playing the majority of games out there and it's able to push my 7950's as much as they need to be.
But if a mid range Intel is going to feel some limitations, then those AMD users are going to be crying :p

I think you should hold out, those i7 are workhorses and you can spend the money buying champange for your girfriend/boyfriend

Sod buying it for her !! buy it for myself. Well to be fair prefer Jack myself.

Hmm it seems i may just stick the 2500k out a little longer. maybe over volt it slightly more as i wont be that bothered if it dies in a year. If i can gt 4.8ish out of it i would be really happy.
