Upgrade my 5770 to....

With the impending release of Battlefield 3 I'm looking at probably needing to upgrade my machine. Current specs:

i7-920 (stock)
Gigabyte UD5
6GB Ram
Ati 5770 (Powercolor)
Win7 64

I've not used the Bf3 Alpha (and won't be able to check under the upcoming beta as I'm not pre-ordering on Origin), but I think it's safe to assume my 5770 won't really be powerful enough?

So what is the natural upgrade to the 5770? I've been looking at 6870s, but I'm a bit out of the loop on gfx cards these days...(would nvidia be a better bet?)

-I'm not looking to go for a crossfire setup
-I'd like a quiet card (my 5770 is whisper quiet on idle)
-The new card can't be much bigger than my current 5770 for case reasons

Any info / help cheerfully appreciated :)

depends how you want to play it, eg medium/high etc

medium = 6870
high = 6970

obviously these are my estimate as no one has played the game yet, but i did play the alpha and its slightly harder on your system than BC2 but not much

you do know that the beta is an open beta, the pre-order boys only get it 2 days early.

29.09.11 is the open date :)

I think the stock coolers on the AMD cards are more noisy than the equivalent NVidia cards but all do aftermarket editions now, I beleive the MSI Twin Frozr II/III is one of the best around providing you dont mind the excess heat being dumped in the case rather than out the back.

Cheers :)

Hmm, wonder if I might be able to get away with a 6870 as I'm only running a 1600x1200 screen...

BC2 runs fine at the moment...

I was under the impression the BF3 beta was only for people who had pre-ordered on Origin? (with the people who owned Medal of Honor getting in 2 days beforehand)

Well, I have just built my i5 2500k + 6870 setup, and I did a lot of research into the 6870 benchmarks and it looks like a card that will be able to handle BF3 very well indeed (if the BC2 benchmarks are anything to go by).

Oh really???? :p

Dice community manager Daniel Matros has dropped an internet bombshell by stating that a PC built around the Battlefield 3 recommended system requirements, which were released earlier this week, will only be able to run the game at Medium settings.

The revelation came via a Twitter-based question and answer session earlier today, when Matros stated that ‘recommended is usually medium’.

When asked if a single Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 1.5GB would have enough power to run the game at Ultra settings, Matros went on to say that if you were aiming for that level of detail from the Frostbite 2 engine, then you’ll probably need two GeForce GTX 580s in SLI configuration.

No mention was made of the resolutions Matros had in mind when he was making the suggestions, but it’s clear that Battlefield 3 will indeed prove challenging for today's hardware. The news is sure to have hardware manufacturers rubbing their hands with glee too, as many people are likely to need an upgrade if they want to play the game at anything approaching the highest settings.

The announcement does raise some questions about how well Battlefield 3 will fare on consoles, however. If a PC is going to need that level of grunt to run the game, it’s a fair bet that it will have to be significantly cut back to run on the current generation of consoles.

I'd say you will be lucky to run BF3 on medium settings on the 6870...depends on your screen size too

I think Daniel Matros is being a bit fast and loose with the truth there. I have a Q6700 @ 3Ghz and a 5770 on a 1920x1200 display and I don't want to upgrade until next year, I'm sure I can get 30 FPS+ without compromising to many settings but until the game get thoroughly benched I won't be making any decisions.

6870 is a solid choice if buying brand new, if second hand go for a 5850 seen them go for £75 they are almost identical to 6870's even have the same power draw.

Ati are fooling nobody really they released the 6850 and 6870 and they are pretty much just an overclocked 5830 and a 5850 performance wise anyway.http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/295?vs=290 a 5850 will probably overclock better too.
