have been pondering an upgrade on my 8800gts for say a bfg gtx 285 but not sure if its worth while ?

my rig

intel 2.4 c2d
asus p5b ( one pcie x16)
6 mg ddr2
Seasonic S12 600W Silent ATX2.0 Power Supply
bfg 880gts 512mb

i've heard that the new pci 2.o are backward compatable but will it be worth the money for the gain ? as i won't be getting the full potential of the card.....

your thoughts please :)

If there is any bottleneck, it'll only be 1-2%. PCI-E 2.0 is only really utilised by the dual gpu cards, and even then, not much.

If you game at 1680*1050 res then I would say there is no real point IMO.
I game at this res and have a Bfg 8800gtx oc2 and plays every game I own, pretty much at full tilt, with no Problems.
I came to the conclusion that there was no point in upgrading, as there are NO games being released for PC that warrant more power at this res, so bought an Xbox 360. Best of both worlds.

Well I went from ASUS 8800GTS 512 to Gainward GTX 280 back in Jan, res 1600x1200 and for me the performance difference was quite something, but then I only paid £225.00 and made a fair chunk back selling the GTS. :) Just buy the cheapest 260/285 if you must have NVidia, sensible money is on the 4870 1GB.

if that is a dual core 2.4 then you will have to oc it or upgrade!!! it will hold any one of they cards back!

Try to play crysis at 1680x1050 veryhigh DX10 and you will get something like 18fps.
The GTX295 in crysis at 1680x1050 veryhigh DX10 get 48fps still NOT 60fps

sry forgot about res....i have a samsung 24" monitor with a native of 1900x1200 so ideally that would be where i want to be.

so i would get a bottleneck from the cpu ??
what would you recomend then as an upgrade ??
I had been thinking of upgrading my E6600 2.4 for something with a bit more bang
but thought it would make more sense to get something that could transfer to a new rig in a few years time, hense the interest in a new gfx card

also with the new releases of gfx cards from ATI with their 4890 series and nVIDIA with their GTX275 just around the corner prices should be comming down soon for their other cards.

that was my thought process, but am open to your reccomendations ;)

wait abit longer for the price to go down and then get it 8800's are not that bad but will be pretty out dated soon

I recently played crysis again (upto where the game goes shi* = Aliens) on Delta, everything v.high Dx10 No AA and the game played like a dream. This is on Q6600, 4 gig Ram.
Avg about 24 FPS which is more than adequate IMO. Looking at FPS is a mugs game if You ask me, if the game 'feels' good enough then play the darn thing instead of watching FPS counter.
GTX 295 may do 48FPS but that sure don't make it worth £500 quid of my money.

You are old school or something 24fps are good for you!!!!!! I can not play games if I do not have minimum 60fps

feels fine to me on Crysis. Does not detract from my enjoyment of the game at all, which for me is the deciding factor. If a game plays nice why worry about FPS? Most people who play games on consoles have no concept of FPS so why on PC do people tend to be more anal about? Sure I am buzzing if I am pulling 60 FPS but I don't get hung up on it, I enjoy playing games more than playing a FPS counter.
