So after seeing the nvidia graphic cards drop in price im just wondering now if maybe i should consider upgrading my 8800gtx. (spec is as in siggy)

Just wondering if there is really any point though  i dont have much problems with my gtx for most games.
I play on https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-054-SA Samsung SM-245B PLUS 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black

Anyways id like to hear some thoughts as to if i should or not upgrade. Id rather not have to replace my mobo if possible.

If you have the spare cash and are bored, then go for it, but I think that it's more itchy feet than necessity?

Cheers Pug

yup you are right :p
I was more just wondering if the new cards performed better at high res's compared to the 8800gtx altho i have a feeling the answer is going to be "only by a bit"
In which case sod it

Just did it .... and ..... not worth it.

Keep the 8800gtx. The gtx280 does not do a huge amount more. Of course if you can flog your 8800gtx for a decent price, or you have spare cash burning a huge hole in the pocket like I did, then GO FOR IT!

yeah i am in a similar position to you.... but i cant shake off that upgrading urge.... maybe installing wista 64bit 2gb of new ram and doing some more extensive overclocking might subdue it. I just wish something apart from crysis would give me a reason to upgrade.

You can get about 100 quid for your 8800GTX, "just" for another £70 you can get a 4870 which is almost as fast as GTX280. Now that's a much better idea and I know that you're going to buy a new card anyway even though you know you don't need it :D That's what it's all about here on OCUK, buying the things you don't need ;)

For single card you can run 4870 on your existing board, for x-fire though you would need a new board (p45/x38/x48 chipset are best atm).

Is your current board a pci-e v2.0 board, or v1.1 ? (I have not looked it up).

honestly i have no idea :p im not on my pc atm so cant check.
ocuk has the mobo but doesnt state if its v2 or v1.1 had a quick browse on the web couldnt really see it there either. Also tbh dont really care for x-fire or sli for that matter

I upgraded to from an 8800gtx to a 4870 and I noticed quite a decent perf increase, mainly in AoC and I love the "free" AA of the 48xx series cards. I do have a quad core cpu clocked at 4ghz though, so I don't know if that helps by not being cpu limited.

Plus I sold the 8800gtx for £150 (PM me for the item no. if you don't believe me) on a certain site that auctions things so who wouldn't like an upgrade for £30?
