Hi there.

I'm getting fed up of not being able to run bf3 on ultra and skyrim etc so I'm wondering is my [email protected] the problem or my atio 5850? I'm know both are very old and need updating but I don't really have the money to be able to upgrad my motherboard and ram as well as the CPU.

So do I spend my £250 budget on a 7950 or buy i5 mobo ram etc. but the thing that is confusing is when I'm playing my games the CPU never hits 100% usage so maybe games don't really need that much CPU power yet.tttt

Any help would be great thanks.

Matt

Im sure you mean AMD HD5850? i don't know a great deal about the q6660 other that its a quad core and its base core is 2.4GHz.

I would say a CPU upgrade is all you need. I've used a 6850 before and max out Battlefield 3 with a x6 1075T Phenom II CPU. I never looked at the benchmarks when this CPU was out so maybe someone with more knowledge on this 07' CPU could give a more accurate answer but personally i think its the CPU and your graphics card should be fine as i've seen these cards running ARMA II at max settings and so on so they are no push overs.

7950 gets my vote. Shouldn't be bottlenecked by your CPU much, if atall. Though when you come to upgrade your CPU, mobo and RAM you'll see a good difference aswell. The GPU is the most important for settings and Framerates though.

Yeah I don't really mind bottlenecking my gpu as it'd be future proof for a while plus I'd get £80 for my gpu if I'm lucky. I'll have a look at the 7950 now as I believe you can flash it to run faster then the 7970? Shall I get the 3gb version?

I don't know about the flashing, i knew it was possible (at a time) for the 6950 to the 6970, not sure with the 7*** series though.

Yes get the 3GB version. :)

Would you not say his CPU is the bottleneck? I thought that appeared to be easily the bottleneck due to the specs of the CPU and some becnhmarks i just looked up. The graphics card is fine if you ask me.

Graphic card imo,5850 won't hack bf3 in ultra,I struggled with a 5870/2600k combo,7850 upward will cope fine with both games with all the bells n whistles enabled ect

Really? That is interesting. How much more power does a 6850 pack over a 5870? As i have Battlefield maxed on a 6850 and Phenom II 1075T combo. No AA but everything at it highest at 1920 x 1080. Nothing's overclocked.

Not much, probably slower, this is at 1920x1080 res,it would play fine but any big action fps would plummet, currently have 7850@ 1050 mhz core and 1450mhz memory with stock gpu voltage and it averages 50-60fps

I think I had 2x aa enabled

Well I'll be upgrading my CPU etc at crimbo maybe, so I'll most prob be getting a 7970 for the future proof. Plus the 7970 looks like its twice the power of my hd5850.

Sorry if my info is incorrect then. I do run a 6850 with a 1075T and get around 30 to 60fps on Ultra at 1920 x 1080 with no AA so i can vouch that this card can run it ultra with more than Playable fps, but if your upgrading the entire system, with a CPU at Xmas i see no foul play upgrading the graphics card first to see if that makes a huge difference. I've also run the game maximum settings with a 965BE and a HD6970 with 60fps clean but that HD6970 when i got it was quite expensive but the CPU is like £90. So maybe a graphics upgrade is the way to go :)
