Hi , Thinking of upgrading, fancy a 1080, budget around 450 ish.
Currently have a OCUK built i7 4770 overclocked to 4.5, 8 gb 2133 memory, 2 x MSI 7950 3gb ICEQ on crossfire. Playing on a 27inch monitor at 1440 res
It has been an absolutely rock solid platform since bought around 3 years ago, (thanks Overclockers ) and never missed a beat.
Not sure which to go for, any advice would be most welcome,

Thanks

Hi,

Cheapest 1080 starts around 499 on here (can't mention/link competitors!).
If you can up your budget a bit, then a 1080 at that price seems good value.

If you can't get to 500, then I'd wait a few days and see what AMDs RX580 is like, as it's looking promising from the rumours. It may also trigger some small drops on the green side too.

if you went with the 480/580, then you'd see a small increase in games that use crossfire well I think, and a pretty sizeable boost in the (many) games which dont utilise it well.

1080 would be a large chunk ahead again, however for that money you could probably pick up crossfire 480 (8GB), which would have the lead in games with CF support.

if we just assume that you want to play the latest games at pretty decent settings (and 1440p+), then I'd try to stretch to the 1080.

if you're still at 1080p, and not looking to upgrade your monitor, then an RX 480 (8G) would be plenty fast enough for a few years yet.

so.... what games, and what resolution? ;)

edit: a couple of bench comparisons for:

1080 vs a single 7970:

1080 vs RX480 (8G):

having looked at that second one, I'd absolutely get a 1080 if you can, or wait for VEGA (next couple of months)

Hi Trojan,
Thanks for going to the trouble of replying.
I think I am going to wait a few weeks in the hope that
the 1080 prices come down a bit.
All the best and thanks again.
