Ok so for the last 10 years I have put up with an aging x58 platform, starting out with an i7 920 @4.0GHz overclocked bundle from OCUK and a Nvidia 470. This CPU was water cooled in a simple 240mm rad custom loop.
This got upgraded to a NV 670 and then a NV 970. The CPU was traded out for a Xenon 5650 which runs lovely at 4.4Ghz. Now GPU wise I eventually went for a NVidia 2070 super, which is doing great.
Now CPU wise I decided to go AMD for more cores, rather than Intel which seem to have lost their way a bit.
Now with the thought of keeping this for another ten years, I'm thinking about either the 5900x or 5950x, now I know that at the moment neither is readily available, but heir scarceness wont last for ever.
12 cores vs 16 for the next ten years that is the question, either will be air cooled with a Noctua D15, so I'm changing out the water cooled loop.
My use case certainly doesn't need 12 or 16 cores, but I don't want to settle for less.
Money isn't an issue.
All comments welcome.
