I was going to go with the E5200 and a Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3, but since ive seen the Foxconn BlackOps Intel X48 (below) i'm wandering down the 8400 route and overclocking it.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-015-FC&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1050

My only question is if that motherboard will support DDR2 as well as DDR3 RAM?

If not then will i be safe with the 8400 and the Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3 for a high overclock?

Any help will be brilliant!!

Thank you :)

Blackops is DDR3 only. Pity really as that is a fantastic price for a top spec mobo.

Just seen you are getting ram as well so why not get the Blackops, E8400 and some DDR3? It's only an extra £12 for a 4Gb 1600mhz kit or a extra £17 for a 2000mhz kit.

Yeah i agree, however problem is as i was only going with the 5200 i've really stretched my budget to the limit. As long as i can safely overclock the 8400 to around 3.5 ish it should easily be enough for my needs! Will this be possible on that board?

Thanks guys

I think if it supports DDR3 it isnt backwards compatible with DDR2. I'd go with the e8400 should hit 4ghz quite easily.

If you mean the GA-EP43-DS3 then i don't see why not. OCUK use them in their overclocked bundles. Most E8400's should hit 4Ghz but i don't know about the capabilities of the P43 boards and high fsb's. Nobody seems to comment on them very much. I would certainly take the Gigabyte over an Asus any day. Better layout for one thing. Just look at the terrible positioning of the 24pin socket on the Asus P5QL.

Haha pastymuncher - we all make mistakes ;)

Some helpful replies guys thank you, good advice as always.

As for gigabyte over asus, i was always an asus fan but then most people are when they start with computers as theyre usually the most popular! But i've grown on all the gigabyte boards and have heard nothing bad of them!
