Upgrade now or in spring?

Considering upgrading - I was going to wait for Window 9/10 but that sounds likes it's nigh on a year away, so 8.1 will be fine (with Classic Shell).

Also, I was also waiting for Intel's new chipset.

So is it worth waiting until early next year for any new chip/MB developments? Or should I simply upgrade over the next couple of months?

Spring... wait to see what Intel are going to bring to the table with broadwell as sandy to ivy... not much to gain in terms of performance, about 10/15%... same with ivy to haswell etc...

I read some stuff last night.

So Broadwell is simply a downscale of Haswell, 14nm instead of 22nm, and uses less power. But I believe it will fit int he same socket LGA 1150.

Skylake is a total new chip with faster SATA/USB/DDR etc. Fitting via a new LGA 1151 socket - http://wccftech.com/intel-skylake-p...port-compatible-lga-1151-socket-z170-chipset/

So my issue is, do I:-
1) Get an LGA 1150 system now(ish), knowing I could upgrade to a Broadwell CPU in the future.
2) Go straight to a Broadwell system when they come out say in 3-4 months.
3) Wait for 7-9 months for Skylake and get it, at no doubt premium prices! ie: A Haswell CPU would be far cheaper!

Argh!

If you're a gamer then I doubt there is much point in waiting. Current cpus are fine for gaming and there are loads of good games coming soon, like GTAV in January.

I was in same boat and every time I looked into upgrading it was all very uninspiring. People said to wait for Ivy, Haswell, Devils Canyon and now Broadwell and Skylake. But the new Nvidia 970 cards are what made me want to upgrade now. Can always upgrade to Broadwell if its worth it later.

Skylake would mean buying expensive DDR4 and waiting a lot longer.

My current machine has seen me fine for SIX years. All I've done it upgraded the GFX card.

I'm still getting reasonable framerates in most things... But I think it's finally time to bite the bullet over the next 4-5 months. Sooner if nothing is gained by waiting.

So, AMD? Anyone got a view on buying into AMD instead of Haswell/Broadwell (1150)?

Same here, currently using a q6600 @3.2, p5q-e, 4gb ram and a GTX280. Has been fine up until the new consoles came out. Been a great PC, just added a few things to it over time like an SSD.

Snap! SSD here too...

But it's time to move on now I think.

I think I'll go Haswell 1150, which then gives to the option of going Broadwell too I believe (it uses the same socket). Seem no reason to wait for Broadwell itself as it will on a Haswell MB. And Skylake will be very expensive when it comes out.

OR, go AMD something if someone can convince me it's a better longterm bet!
