Upgrade now, or wait?

My system (an I7 4790K) is somewhat bottlenecked by my old 7870XT.

It plays most games fairly well, but in some modern titles (eg: Siege and Elite Dangerous) the frame rates down below my ideal 60fps... Add to this, Elite Dangerous seems to freeze my graphics cards sometimes, I'm looking to upgrade...

So the question is, should I upgrade now, or limp along and wait till later this year? - I believe AMD are bringing out a new generation of cards?

AMD and NVIDIA have new cards on the horizon but at the moment is still speculation as to what is being released.
On paper AMD seem to be releasing the best range of cards and Nvidia are possibly holding back the big guns till late Q4 or next year. Dont expect to see anything till June or later.

980ti is a very good card and will last you. I`m thinking of skipping Pascal altogether and waiting for the next one after that.
Although the XFX Fury deal OCUK are doing at the moment (if its still on) for £350 would be a good choice.

I must admit the problems I'm having with my AMD, and the continued problems even in reviews of the XFX Fury, makes my consider jumping ship to NVidia... But I can't justify £500+ on a video card... I think £300 odd is my sweet spot...

It's still worth waiting for the new cards as it's very likely the current gen cards will drop in price or you can grab a used on from the bay for a bargain.

Actually, having just looked, NVidia are suppose to be releasing their new Pascal units this summer... So I guess that would be the time to pick one of those up, or as you suggest, one of the cards available now, at a far lower price maybe...

the best time to buy a GPU is either just after they are released - possibly the sales period in the run up to Christmas, after that you always run the risk of something faster/cheaper coming along... with all the rumours of new cards being announced/released this summer I personally would hold off

if nothing else you might be able to pick up a current card for a lot less as retailers start dumping their stock

Wait. All signs and rumours point to the new Nvidia range coming within 1-2 months and AMD's stuff not long after that.

Are you going to be upgrading your monitor? If not, you might as well dive in and start having fun now because the current crop are more than up to the task.
