So I'm possibly looking to upgrade my current PC to go to 4k resolution (I'm eyeing up one of the alienware qd-oleds).

I've currently got

3700x
Crosshair VII Herov
16gb of terrible ram
dark rock pro 4
3080.

I'm seriously considering getting a 5800x3d to tide me over another few years but part of me is wondering should I jump to AM5 but I'm not sure if waiting for the 9000 x3d models is worth it?

Budget wise it would be for about £1k without a GPU as I'll probably wait and see what AMDs offerings are likenext gen.

Any suggestions?

Yeah I'm seriously tempted to go for that, but correct me if I'm wrong the 9000 series performs roughly the same as 7000 x3d series but with less powerd draw?

Another plus point would be getting to make the full use of my 990 Pro ssd

5700x3d is the more budget friendly option staying on am4 but 16gb memory is borderline these days .

Going 4k you want a 4080 super ideally unless you hold fire.

What motherboard do you have ?
Crosshair VII Hero so I don't think I can even get the faster ssd support?

There are no 9000x3d chips yet so no one knows.
All we can say is than the Ryzen 9000 non-x3d chips are similar in gaming performance as their 7000 counterparts. There's a small performance uplift, but not very significant .
Oh I was comparing te 9000 counterparts to their 7000x3d counterparts.

So taking a look (I have no idea if this is a good setup or not) I can get a

Tuf B650-Plus
7800x3d
Corsair Vengenance 32gb

For £660.

I wonder how much I could recoup for my mobo, ram and CPU but if it comes close to making the new build £300ish (the price of the 5800x3d) that's mighty tempting

Pcie3 in your board which isn't such a big deal in terms of speed for gaming.

So many options but unless you upgrade your GPU that's going to give you the biggest performance uplift at 4k.

GPU is def being upgraded but holding fire until the next gen ones and probably try and get a used 4080 etc

Still tempting, the price of the mobo and ram would mean I have a future upgrade path vs effectively being the best the platform can get

Usually about once every 5 years so technically I’m overdue.

Realistically I like to get my moneys worth and run the platform as long as I can
