Upgrade on tight budget but just play WoW

Hello.

TLDR: I'll be able to save £540 to buy new board, chip and RAM to play WoW

My current PC is now very long in the tooth - I think mostly over ten years old. I only play WoW, which I know isn't that intensive but I raid a couple of times a week, things take longer to load than I like and Windows 11 is just around the corner. I haven't kept up with gaming specs since I put this thing together.

I've got monitor, Case, 650W PSU, 250GB SSD, Windows 11 and a plucky Nvidia 1060 GTX that I can put up with for a bit longer if necessary...but I understand that's ancient.

While I'd like to splash out I'm still paying off my poor moggie's vet bills, hence the pretty tight budget.

What I've read so far the AMD 3DX CPUs seem decent...but it looks as if AM4 boards are being phased out.

I was looking at this processor https://www.overclockers.co.uk/amd-...ocket-am4-processor-retail-pro-amd-01799.html

This motherboard is well rated and on the cheaper side https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-mpg-b550-gaming-plus-amd-am4-b550-atx-motherboard-mb-35a-ms.html but I'm not sure when OcUK will stock it.

16GB of RAM looks to be ~£50

That leaves a bit over £250 for a GPU. I don't think it's worth spending more than that for WoW so something like these?

The other alternative would be to put some bits together from the Clearance Section.

What would folks suggest?

Thanks in advance.

yes for MMOGs X3D cpus are king
you are in a bit of a tight spot though tbh, as you rightly pointed out AM4 boards are end-of-life, so buying them new isn't the best use of money
and buying the 5700x3d used on ebay doesn't save much either unfortunately
you also haven't budgeted for RAM as it would leave you £195 rather than £250 (£540 - £200 - £95 - £50) and to be honest you should be looking at 32gb ram rather than 16gb
and also a 250gb ssd is anaemic, you'd be looking to upgrade that for a 1tb drive
you also haven't told us what make/model of psu it is, so that may well require an upgrade too

in summary, for your budget, a bit of a hard one

what is your computer's exact specs?

Mobo is a Gigabyte Z87X-D3h
RAM 4x4GB Crucial DDR3
GPU is a Zotac Geforce GTX 1060, 6GB
PSU is Seasonic G Series 650W 80+ Gold
SSD is 250GB Crucial
Old HDD is available for other files

I appreciate your time. Thank you

SSD is 250GB Crucial
run a program called crystaldiskinfo and see what the health is. i would hazard after 11 or so years, it's health isn't that great

ok this is what i would propose

reuse your case and power supply, the new components i've specced are VERY power efficient and would not even tax a 400w PSU, your old seasonic is a decent unit so i would have no hesitation reusing it
reuse your case
whatever cooler you had for the 4670k, it isn't compatible with AM4

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £547.96 (includes delivery: £0.00)

i've ditched the 5700x3d to fit the rest into budget, even a 5600 is much, much better than a 4670k so, it's a massive improvement, regardless
the 5600 comes with a puny stock cooler, it isn't great, but it's sufficient for now
i've gone for the gigabyte board as all these AM4 pre-order boards are not likely to ever be restocked, so don't kid yourself with the prices lol
32gb ram
you have enough to get you a new 500gb nvme ssd (gen 4 no less!), this will be your boot + main drive, and will allow you to reuse your crucial ssd to store other stuff
the 4060 faster than the 3060 and more power efficient

all the above for <£10 over budget :P
i'm sure you can sacrifice 2 pints at the pub on a night out lol

If you went with the 12400F and H610 route, you'd save around £40, which could be put toward a different graphics card, but not sure if there's anything much worth buying for £300 over the £250 4060. There is the Arc B580, but no idea how that does in WoW. 7600 XT 16GB could be squeezed in, if you can find one, but again, don't know if that makes any sense for WoW.
