Hi,

Would anyone please be able to confirm what processor upgrade options are available for a board currently containing an intel i5-2500 (6M cache, 3.30 GHz) processor? I think that the socket type is LGA1155 but am not absolutely 100% sure about that.

My hope is to replace the current i5-2500 (3.30 GHz) CPU with a faster processor (i7 ?) to be used in a machine that is used for video intensive work such as live video capture/encoding/streaming.

Thx

If you have an i5-2500 then you can put any sandybridge 2*** series CPU into the motherboard.

Upgrading will mean these chips:

i7-2600
i7-2600k
i7-2700k

Yes, any of those are fine.

I know your not asking this question, but I would wait for Ivybridge if I was you. Early reports are showing a significant jump in CPU heavy activities performance.

Your i5 will surely get you through till then.

Thx for the replies and the info.

If I decide to upgrade now using an i7-2600k is it just straight swap over of CPU's replacing the i5 with the i7? Or, do I need to change any jumper settings on the motherboard or make manual BIOS changes to get the i7-2600k to function correctly?

Secondly, will the Ivybridge processors fit into an LGA1155 socket or would I have to upgrade the motherboard to be able to use an Ivybridge processor?

Thx

If you have a P67 or Z68 motherboard then you should be looking at a processor with a K on the end of the model number.

They have an unlocked multiplier for overclocking goodness but you need a P67 or Z68 motherboard.

I have been trying to find out the precise type of motherboard in the machine without sucess. It is a Dell machine and the specification covering the motherboard is minimal having had a reasonable hunt around the Dell support site. The only info I have on the motherboard is that it is model 06D7TR.

Thx

d/l cpu-z, that should give you more info on the motherboard and ram.

if its a dell then its 99% likely it wouldn'tbe upgradeable to ivybridge and no overclocking features.

Open it up and look for a make and model number written on the motherboard.

I did, that is how I got the part number of 06D7TR, there are no indications of manufacturer and model other that that. I am not sure but perhaps Dell have their motherboards produced specifically for them?

Rgds
