Hi, My rig is in my sig.
My fairly decent 4890 and 60gb OCZ Vertex are not using their full potential in my current rig imo.
My cpu is at 3ghz, running it at 3.6ghz gets far too hot in benches. Ram is only 800mhz and so limits many overclocks.
I have made a thread about my pc months ago, but now as long as my uni halls subscription for next year isnt silly then I can afford to upgrade (currently on placement).

Do I.....

Get a massive cooler for the e6600 and hope for 3.6ghz at a better temperature.

Sell my cpu, ram, motherboard and get an i3 or an i5 750 setup, either at 4ghz.

Sell my e6600 and pick up a 45nm quad and clock it.

Hold out for AMD's next line-up of cpus? (No idea how long).

Thanks in advance.

What do you use the pc for?

Games? Solely for benchmarking?

The cpu, even at 3.6GHz shouldn't get anywhere near as hot in games as it does in benches, and 3.6Ghz is enough for games at the moment.
Yeah you could go quad core, but you might as well save your money.

Only thing that will limit the SSD is SATA2, and that's only if you were Raid-0-ing a number of them.
4890 will be perfect with 3 or 3.6GHz.

The pc is used for internet and gaming. It runs games well at 1920x1200 maxed out but I have seen many benches and the core 2 duos dual cores are massively outpaced.
I don't really run benchmarks on it, the only time I would do is to compare with people on ocuk (who I don't know in real life).

The main reason for considering the upgrade is that I am back at uni in Sept and am currently on placement and so it is either buy it in the short term or wait 18 months.

Would a good mini-upgrade be buying a higher end core2quad perhaps to clock to 3.4-4ghz?
The reason I ask this is my brother has the 2.83ghz 45nm quad and faster ram, for a pc he rarely games on and has not clocked. I could give him some £££ and swap cpu and ram may be.

An i5 quad would be awesome, but the low price of the i3 is appealing, even though it has poor clock for clock speed compared to other cpus.
