Upgrade Options

Currently I have a 6700XT paired with a 5700X and 64GB of 3200MT/s RAM. I game at 1440p and whilst I hadn't planned to I purchased a new monitor (Lenovo r27qe) as it was cheap. My currently monitor is also 1440p but only 75hz, so I generally vsync games and aim for around 75FPS in game settings.

I'm therefore now contemplating upgrading the GPU and have seen the Gigabyte 7800XT OC for £420 and wondered on peoples thoughts on the upgrade (thinking i can sell the 6700 for £150-£175) as YouTube side by sides suggests a 50% increase in FPS for most games.

New models could easily be 3 months away still, but I get the point, the internet also doesn't seem to like Gigabyte AMD GPUs which is making me wary that is the reason this model is cheaper than the rest.

wow really? I was going to buy 7800XT Windforce.

That was the one I was contemplating. Sold out at that price now anyway so makes decision much easier.

I don't know if they're any better nowadays but they've been off my list for a while. And I remember the heat Giga Man was getting on here, he did his best but he had a lot to contend with.

Shame, my Gigabyte DS3L board was immense.

Yeah, I’ve never had any issues with anything gigabyte I’ve had before, but there was a lot of hate on Reddit for their gpus.

Call me a bearing snob, but they use sleeve bearings on their lower-end cards and during the mining days their fans weren't exactly popular. Sleeves are typically less heat resistant too, compared to the ball bearings used by many other brands.

New 180hz monitor comes on Thursday hence the consideration of a new gpu to go with it.

Plan is to at some point replace the second 75hz monitor with an OLED (also 27”), when they are closer to £300 though I think.

Two 27” monitors is perfect for me as they just fit on the desk and give me the best compromise for gaming and working from the same machine.

Received the new monitor yesterday. Installed took all of 5 minutes to swap the VESA mount. Looks decent enough but is a little thicker and the bottom bezel is a little bigger than my old monitor (iiyama PL2740QS). Colour wise I will say I cant see any real differences between the two and if I didn't want the higher refresh rates and it wasn't only £150 I might have decided to return it. I still might, it really depends if I can get used to the fact the monitors are different (I bought two of the same before so they had symmetry) and so sit ever so slightly different on the desk and I'm not sure I can deal with spending another £150 to get the two to match and then have to deal with selling two monitors (even when I have the boxed).

Keep it, your eyes will thank you for the higher refresh rate.

I did, and then I ended up buying a second one after being able to sell my old one for £75.

Yeah for now. I’m interested to see how my 6700xt copes with Indy. Then I’ll see what the new year brings.
