so im getting on a bit and at my age christmas is a bit of a none issue and theres nothing overly that i want asides from an upgrade....now i was going to wait for the sand to hit but the mrs has basically said that i can get a mobo, cpu, ram and she will pretty much go halfs. which is a nice thing and in a way has forced me to upgrade now else i wont get an xmas present.

so i run a q6600 at 3.1 atm, i simply cant overclock more then that as my mobo just doesnt like it.(trust me iv tried and im on water! so temps are a non issue)

i was thinking of getting:

4GB (2x2GB) Corsair Dominator DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600), CAS 9-9-9-24,
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3
Intel i5 760, S1156, Lynnfield Quad Core, 2.8 GHz

good choice? anything to swap out?

Is your current rig struggling on anything and what will it be used for?

Looking at your rig as it stands maybe a new gfx card would be money better spent? ANd then next year upgrade the other parts once the sand has settled?

a new GPU is in order imo - I went from a 260 to a 460 and the difference was huge.
also maybe look at an ssd....like Philly said
btw what sort of temps you getting under water?

+1 on the GPU and a SSD. What 6600 do you have? If it is a GO then I would also actually look in to a second hand board that clocks better in the MM. Then next Xmas you can look at sandy.

It would also help to know what you do with your PC.

sorry i havent updated my stats. ignore the gpu i have a 5870.
my current rig isnt really struggling no, maybe in arma 2 but thats it.....
like i said its kinda a do or dont get anything (literally nothing else i want)

I doubt there would be any significant gains over what you already have . Like somone else said, an SSD will probably give the biggest increase.

Ah, you have a 5870 - no worries there :)

May I ask which "gigabyte DS3" you have, if you have something like the EP45-DS3 (which can run PCIe v2.0 x8x8 crossfire) then you may consider a second 5870 considering the current pricing.

However, if you feel your current graphics are fast enough then I must echo what the others have said - get an SSD. You may not feel that you need one - but once you have it installed you will wonder why you didn't have one before. This would be the one I would go for.

Hmm, which monitor have you got?

Blu ray writing drives have also come down in price a fair bit.

Or maybe sound card + new speakers if you don't already have a decent audio setup?

Just seems a shame to go for i5 now when SB is less than a month away. If there's literally nothing else you want you could ask for an Overclockers voucher and buy it in January?

ok so might get a ssd then will look into that.
dont need anything like a new monitor or anything , i have one that is highly rated and cost a bomb as it is!

Ask for some dosh and put it towards a substantial upgrade in the new year.

Hardly worth going to i5 from a q6600 @ 3.1 imo.
