So I recently got my hands on an 8800GTX Ultra off of a mate for £50. Now my current setup is:

Asus A8N-E Motherboard
2gb DDR RAM (not sure what type, but it's not good)
ATI 1800XT (will be replaced by the 8800GTX)
AMD X2 3800+

Now if I get the following:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+
£103.39

Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500C5 TwinX (2x2GB) Supplied with Airflow Fan
£81.06

Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 SLi Compliant PSU
£64.61

I'm only spending £249.06 (plus £50 for the graphics card). Is it worth doing that for the upgrade, or am I better off just building a new machine and getting a new motherboard etc etc.?

I may be wrong here but isn't the A8N-E a socket 939 part? If so then you need a new motherboard to go with that CPU anyway. Other than that the parts could be fine for an upgrade, you could save a bit of cash on the Ram though, decent PC6400 would be more than enough and cheaper to boot.

upgrade (cpu, mobo, ram)

I got a Asus p5k-e, 2Gb DDR2 ocz 6400, e6300 for £100 of Members market. Don't stick with amd for £250 go intel route.

What psu do you have already?

Re:

Hmm. You might be right about the CPU. What RAM would you suggest?

My PSU isn't very good, it's like 350w or something. So what do you think is the most sensible upgrade for the cheapest price?

Including a motherboard and it should overclock well but it is about the same overall price.

Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L Intel P31 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £39.99

(£84.59)
GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz Black Dragon DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GB24GB6400C5DC) £40.99
(£48.16) £40.99
(£48.16)
Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 SLi Compliant PSU £54.99
(£64.61) £54.99
(£64.61)

Re:

What sort of gains am I looking at if I spend £400-500 instead and buy pretty much a new machine?

Will that upgrade allow me to game at max settings for a while?

I've got two 500gb hard drives. To be honest I'm just thinking if I'm getting a new motherboard anyway, I might as well upgrade the whole lot, CPU, RAM, PSU and Motherboard.

Just trying to work out the best value for money. I'm willing to spend like £500, but I'd rather spend about 300-400.

Is that including gfx card or not?

Re:

That depends really on whether or not a single 8800GTX will stand up to playing games at high settings and will match up to the rest of the rig.

Ideally I'd like to be able to play games on my HDTV which has a resolution of 1920x1080.

And you should get a very nice clock out of taht cpu and mobo combo.

I didn't notice the e8400 isn't even a pound more so you might as well go for that.
