Current system is
CoolerMaster GX-750
Gigabyte GA-P55-USB3
Intel i5 760-2.80GHz Socket 1156
Corsair XMS3 (4X 2GB) PC3-12800C9
Samsung Spinpoint F3 -1TB
Samsung 240G Solid sate (non-pro)
Radion HD6850 (1920X1080)

So what's the most cost effective path to gain a little more performance?? Would simply upgrading the GPU be like throwing good money after bad or would it provide a stopgap boost to performance until I have the spare dosh for a new build?

Generally system does all I need it to do with the exception the graphics being off the pace a bit now. Also the motherboard is getting on a bit so only supports 3Gbs on the SATA ports so I'm not getting the full benefit from the SSD.

If I go for just a graphics card what would be best bang for buck on a budget of say £150 ish. That would provide a reasonable gain over what I have now?

Cheers

depends what you need it for..basic stuff like web browsing and watching youtube video's its fine for, All depends what you want to use it for

Generally just for Office type stuff and browsing. Having said that I've just splurged (the last 10mins) on Elite, Alien Isolation & Galactic Civ III in the Steam sale. (can't resist a bargain) First games I've bought in a couple of years. I'll test the water with those and see how it copes.

Gut feeling is it's getting ready for a new build, I found the invoices and I built this end of early 2010 so it's done OK. My feeling is a new graphics card may well perk it up briefly but that feels like throwing good money after bad and I would be better saving up for a fresh system.

Hello there, just reading the topics and thought I would try a little input.

Those games you listed won't be demanding, so your setup should cope fine, but unless the ssd is causing problems due to the lack of interface, then all you would really benefit from is a new graphics card, that is depending on your power supply mind, but from a little look on the main site the R7 370 range and the gtx 950 seem to be in your budget and I've read good reviews.

If you don't need to spend it then don't, the choice is yours my friend.

Cheers, I'll have a play metaphorically and literally over the weekend and see how it copes. PSU is a CoolerMaster GX-750, so should be up to a reasonably modest upgrade of GPU. I'd not thought to have a peek in members market so that's another possibility.

If it will cope with what I've just splurged on game wise I'll hold fast and look at a new build in the new year.

Well I had a little play about last evening and I was pleasantly surprised how well it ran Alien Isolation so for the time being I'll hold fast and save for a new build in the new year.

Cheers for the pointers..
