Upgrade or new system dilema !

Hi all,
My current system, listed below, has been a real gem but it is beginning to struggle with newer games like GTA 5 and Project Cars. Performance away from games is still very good but with DX12 games nearly with us, I would like to be able to play them with more than average graphic settings.
I don't think I can get an equivalent system for the money I have and want to know if it's worth getting some upgrades or are my CPU and Mobo a bit long in the tooth ?
I have nearly €1000 euro and could possibly get another €200 if needed.

Current system is..

Asrock P67 Extreme 4 Gen 3 Motherboard (original v1.0 BIOS)
Intel 2500K Sandybridge CPU (overclocked to 4.2Ghz)
8 GB Corsair RAM
700W Silent Gold Coolermaster **
MSI Twin Frozr ii 6950 Graphics
3 x WD 7200 Hard Drives.

Possible upgrades ??

16GB faster RAM + Nvidia 980 GTi graphics + SSD Hard Drive for OS (Windows 10).

All and any recommendations (within my budget) are most welcome.

TIA :D

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind but won't the new tech be even more expensive ?

It will be, but your money will be worth more if you put them to some bank deposit ;-)
Faster memory won't give any noticeable performance boost, more memory will not help as well (in terms of your issues). I've seen 8 GB HyperX by Kingston for 30 pounds somewhere (let's say it was somewhere as this forum wouldn't allow me mentioning any competitor's name), so for peace of mind you could get them, if you need more memory somewhere else - like graphic jobs.
6950 is something you should definately change, now :D

Comparing this card to GTX 660Ti (~GTX 760) you are able to imagine how quicker GTX 970, for example, would be. And once Volta is released (as much expensive as it could), buy second 970 for SLI ;-) unless you find out one VOlta will do job better. If you can handle 6950 so far, you will be happy with 970, there's no need to get 980Ti (at least now) IMO - I'd buy stuff for 300-320 pounds, rest hoard to bank depo and wait until Volta to see if it's good reason for touch it.
Plus SSD, but without Windows 10. Really. Do you like cheese ? Mild, mature, extra mature ? Windows 10 is very mild now, all it needs is to getting more mature (and less buggy), lol.

Lots of helpful info, thanks guys.
I will probably go with a cheapish GPU upgrade for now and save up for newer stuff .
Thanks for GPU comparison link..very interesting. I have been out of the loop a while. It's a shock to see how much has improved in just a few years !

One other question.
Are the nVidia 970/980 cards any longer in physical size to my old 6950 ?
The 6950 is a tight fit on the Asrock mobo.
