Hi Guys..

Before I start, Im goin to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New 2011..

Right... I currently have in my machine a Gainward Golden Sample GTX 275 graphic card.

I was thinking of upgrading this to something a bit more current like an ATI 5870 or GTX 470..

Would I benefit by swapping to any of the card I have just mentioned..

I usually only play the Call Of Dutys and some other FPS games (Usually Play These At 1920x1200).. and will definetly be getting the Duke Nukem Forever when thats released.

My setup at the moment consists of :-

Intel Quad Core 9550 - Running at 3.4 (32oC) idle
4 Gig OCZ Platinum Ram
GTX 275
6 Gig of Hard Drives
2 Dvd Writers
1 Dvd Reader
24' Dell Monitor (1920x1200)

Cheers Guys and thanks for any help you can provide.

I'd wait tbh until you experience bad FPS.

I'm sticking with my GTX280 for the time being which still maxes out every game i play

If it still handles everything great then no need to upgrade. Besides new cards card coming out very soon that look very promising. If you get the itch spend it on something more worthwhile like a new cooler for higher oc or an ssd.

I agree. The question should be 'are the low fps spoiling my enjoyment of game x'. If the answer is yes, then buy. If not, then wait, and you can have new tech six months down the line that will be of more benefit.

It's a good card the 275 but at that resolution you are bound to be stretching it a bit when you add the 'pretties' . Still , as said, if it's coping at the moment .....?

If you would like a change.... then would probably go for the 5870 @ £180 . Very good price and 2 yr warranty with OcUk.AND you could lessen the blow by selling your 275; have a look at MM.:D

Wait for the GTX570 & then either buy one of those or a much cheaper GTX470 (which will require a 3rd party HSF to make it quiet). In the next week or so most of the current gfx cards will have price drops so see what fits your pocket then ;)

GTX275 will struggle already on many recent games @ 1920x1200 unless you lose graphical detail & or AA levels.

Really depends on how much you want to spend, of course the fastest card will do you better.

Online play is more critical. I play COD4 MP a lot and even though it's an old game I have trouble maintaining a steady 125fps on my 5870@965MHz/9650@4GHz, which is where that game should be played. It bogs down in firefights and that is with the eye candy turned down. The 5870 is almost twice as fast as your 275.

But to answer your question, yes you should upgrade to at least one of the cards you mentioned. 5870 is a little faster and uses less energy than the 470 so I would go with that. OCuK has a good deal on 5870 right now, I understand. But if you think you might want to spend more, you'd best wait a few days until the new ATi stuff is out.
