Upgrade or overclock 6600k

Can see your points about upgrading while i have value in old parts. Will the ryzen 4 be a different socket?

Ryzen 4000 series will be on AM4, same as the current ones. There may be a new chipset launched with it (X670, the elusive B550?) as well to support any new features that come with the 4000 series. Current boards will probably need a BIOS update to work with the 4000 series processors.

Ryzen 4000 may be the last processor on the AM4 platform.

The B450 is an slightly cut down version of the X470.
Less SATA ports, no SLI support etc.

For example the MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX is a decent board to pair with a either an 3600/3700X.

If you really want to future proof the X570 chipset would be slightly better for the PCIE Gen4 support, higher memory OC support and the more robust VRM solution.

But the B450 is perfectly fine for a budget build, it will get the job done.

I have the exact same chipset and motherboard and have been wondering the same thing in the last month. The little 6600 has been great and I'm running it at 4.5 GHZ but when its been the bottle neck in VR games I play. Been thinking about the Ryzen 3700 route myself but I mainly play Iracing which doesn't utilize multicore very well and depends on your clock speed. This is with a 2070 super btw.
