Flight sim X is struggling a bit with my spec.
First how good is this spec now?
Is there anything i can do to upgrade it?
OR would a new build be better?

Current Spec
Gainward BLISS GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) -
Intel Core 2 Duo E2180 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.00GHz (800FSB) -
Pioneer DVR-212DBK 18x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black)
Abit IP35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Antec NSK 6580 Super Midi Tower Case - 430W Earth Watts PSU
OCZ 2GB (4x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series
Western Digital Caviar SE16 400GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM

TIA

Extra 2GB of RAM and a new CPU would see you through nicely. If you play at a high res the you might want to get a 4870 or something, i'm pretty sure a 430 watt Antec Earthwatt PSU can run one without problems.

It might be better for the long haul to start from scratch if you are a flight sim fan, due to the upgrade cost to get some good improvement.

The the P35 socket 775 is a good solid platform but is now outclassed by the i5/i7 platform.

To upgrade I would go for a 775 quad, you could probably pick up a q6600 cheap,
Your motherboard is decent, but you need to at least double the amount of RAM, and run a 64bit OS, either win7 or vista - and trade that 8800 in for a GTX275 or better.
This in turn would warrant a better power supply also.

That will give a big boost, but you are probably looking at the best part of £300 and there is really no further upgrade path, beyond that you are looking at a new build.

So in short, yes you could make big gains with an upgrade, but you need to weigh up weather it would be more efficient (money wise) to start from scratch.

Whats the budget?

Hmm its tempting to tell you to max out your current system, because you would have change from your £500 and you could sell the old CPU, GPU and PSU to offset the cost even further...

edit: you also need to be running an x64 OS to use more RAM (4gb or more) , so thats another consideration.

...what screen size/res do you like to run?

Hi,

From looking at your spec I would say a new build would be the best solution. But it all depends on your budget, that CPU only runs at 2ghz and the 8800 GT although a great card can now be replaced by superior tech now available.

If you want a spec, let me know and I will have a good attempt.

Regards
