I've got a fairly poky, but old, system:

Asus p5k deluxe
E6600 @ 3.0GHz
ATI 5850 1gig
8gig ddr2 8500

Various SATA HDD, A decent PSU and a H70 watercooler.

Is it worth dropping ~£100 on a new chip for this old board or am I better off saving up and moving onto sandybridge?

Obviously you could keep the system going with a second hand quad core for under £100, but on the other hand if you can afford it a new Sandybridge setup is sure to satisfy you further. :)
