I have won an intel i7 920 processor which is coming in a few days and dont know whether to sell it or upgrade.

Reason for upgrading:
Mainly playing games supported with a lot of large file transfer with my 1TB HD
Multi-tasking, i like having a game open and being able to alt+tab quickly
The fact i got the processor free and dont need to cash

Current setup:
Saphire HD4850 512MB
P45 NEO-F mobo 775
Samsung 1TB f1 HD
Geil black dragon 2gb 4-4-4-12 800mhz Dual Channel
Intel C2D E7200 @ 3.4ghz
antec 900 case
Windows Xp sp3
19inch monitor 1280 x 1024 hapy on this res

What i need from you:
Do i keep my current system and sell the CPU for £200ish? (Dont really need the cash)
Keep the CPU and sell my current setup and use that cash to pay for (free upgrade)

I only have windows xp so im guessing i am going to need vista?
My graphics card is HD4850 so should i upgrade that also?
Is it worth waiting for prices to come down on I7 hardware?

Hi ,

It depends on how much your willing to spend. ??

You can upgrade your system in many ways.

Sell the I7 and then buy a Core2 Duo 8600 or a Q9650 to go into your current P45 setup. ?

This way you loose no money and get a decent upgrade.

The other way is sell it all and buy a whole new system around the I7. This would be the most costly but you get exactly what you want.

Lastly but slightly more conservative , Keep some of your existing parts. Like PSU , Monitor , Case , Hard drive and graphics card. Then just buy the board and some ram to get you going. Then over time add a piece to your system to eventually make it how you would like. Spreads the spending and is a little fun too.

But personally I would just probably get a E8600 or Q9650 and stick it in your current setup. Maybe buy yourself another 2GB mem to go with it.

Hope this helps

Sell the CPU, there's really nothing wrong with your existing setup and i7 kit will only really drop in the Autumn, until then it's X58 all the way, which means DDR3 and stupidly expensive motherboards, for very little additional real-world performance.

dont know if i was clear but im understanding that if i sell my current setup of
e7200
p45 mobo neo-f
800mhz ram geil 4-4-4-12
That should cover the cost of my motherboard and then i won £200 so that should cover the cost of the ram therefore a "free upgrade" but you said i wont notice real-world performance so its making me think

That will not be enough to cover it.

You would probably want 6GB DDR3 £200 approx ( so you get the 2GB module sticks )
A decent Mobo will set you back £220.

But you could do this with no problem.

just out of interest how did you win the cpu?

you lucky devil.

and i would agree with steve258 i would go for a new monitor. i have just gone from a 19" to a 22" and im loving it. but i do see that you say you are happy with current res so maybe not very helpful to ya.

i won the cpu playing call of duty 4 for EPS Season 1 in esl league/lan (PC)
I got Most valuble player and that was the prize, we came 3rd and won £1000 making £200 each. So thats how i have the extra £200 to go towards it :)
