Upgrade or Start Over

Hey all,

I bought a gaming PC a few years ago and I've come to a bit of a cross roads as to whether to upgrade or start over.

My current Spec

Mobo:ASUS M4A78 Pro
Processor: AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black Quad Core Processor
GFX Card: 1GB ATI HD4890
1TB HDD with 32MB Buffer
8GB 800MHZ DDR2 SDRAM
Case: XGS Midi Tower Gaming Chasis
Windows 7 Premium

Monitor: Iiyama Prolite E2407-HDS (1920x1080) Full HD Monitor

As already said I didn't actually build this pc as I've never had the courage to build one myself until now if needed.

The only things I've done to it myself was add extra memory & install a new GFX card a few years ago.

Is it worth upgrading or should I just start over? If I was to start over I could probably stretch to a budget of around £500ish.

If I'm honest I would still like a decentish gaming pc but maybe a smaller one with a smaller case so I could slot it in next to my TV & hook it on there.

Thanks in advance

Tbh I'd be looking for a nice upgrade with that, rip basically everything out except for windows and perhaps the HDD if it's SATA

I'd definetly advise starting over for the most part. I upgraded from a Phenom II X4 to a modern Intel chip recently and the difference was night and day. The 4890 would be just fine to drop into a new build to tide you over until you can afford a new GPU though. Despite its age, it's still a fairly decent card that'll be capable of running most things well enough. The only issue might be the massive amount of heat they pump out if you're getting a smaller case, but if it's one with a blower cooler design you should be grand. The hard drive will probably be fine for a secondary storage drive too, but I'd definetly recommend getting an SSD for your OS drive.

I say keep the HDD and the case and start over. Buy an SSD for OS. The 955 is getting old now and you will see a massive difference in upgrading that. Buy a motherboard that supports SLI/XFire, incase you decide to go down that road in the future (I made the mistake of not buying a properly supported Mobo -.-)

Thanks for the advice all

Just looking at some replacement parts at present. Are mobo bundles any good? or is it better to buy Mobo, Processor & memory seperate?

SSD will be a must & i'll use the 1TB HDD as secondary drive. The rest of the old parts I'll probably sell on Ebay if I can not that I will get much I doubt.

Will post upgrade spec details later.

Yes, the mobo bundles are excellent - post the spec and someone will sort you out
For £500 you could get something quite decent, perhaps an i3 + nice graphics seeing as you already have a HDD
