Upgrade Orange Contract

I was on the orange website the other day checking my bill and I noticed it said that I am able to upgrade from the 10th March. My contract is an 18month contract due to end in June.

I went and had a look at some phones today just out of interest and got colored by the pushy people in Phones4u!!

anyway the guy said I would have to pay £75 to get out of my current contract. But i don't want to get out of this contract, I am happy with the contract I'm in but I just want to add the "unlimited" internet bundle to my current contract (I think this is an extra £7). I simply want to upgrade my phone (maybe, I havn't actually seen anything that jumps out yet. Not been persuaded to jump on the iPhone/Blackberry bandwagon yet)

I explained all this to the guy but he seems to think I will have to pay?

Am I right in thinking that this isn't right?

also, do I have to upgrade through orange or can I just go into any phone shop and do it there?

Sorry for the silly questions but this was my first contract so I'm not sure how it all works.

Thanks in advance

If you don't want out of the contract you shouldn't have to pay anything. Just give them a call and ask about adding the internet package.

Alternatively, you can add a package through your web account.

As for upgrading your phone, I'm in pretty much the same boat at the moment, just waiting for orange to get back to me after requesting my PAC. Seems they wanted £99 for me to upgrade to an Hero, but after talking to one of the cs reps, they are going to try and put a deal together.

I think the reason the sales guy wanted you to pay is because they would cancel your old contract and start a new one, through Phones4u.

If you just want to renew your contract with Orange, just wait until March 10th, then go into your account online and the option will be in there somewhere. When I did it I renewed my contract, got a 10% discount and bought the HTC Hero for £100. Remember, this adds on any remaining days to your new contract. I think you can also go into an Orange shop and do it, but I didn't try that.

Thanks. Yeah i didn't think Id have to pay. I took the contract out with phones4u in the first place. I guess he just saw pound signs and was just ignoring everything that was said.

I'm going to wait until the 10th now and see what deals I can get with orange. Thinking about the iPhone now, but orange website wont let me look at my upgrade deals until the 10th obviously.

So I have just come off the phone with Orange and have secured what I think is a decent deal. I now have an 18 month contract with 200 mins, unlimited texts, unlimited mobile internet (500MB) and a free HTC hero, all for the princley sum of £15 p/m.

Speak to Orange direct, you can upgrade within the last 3 months either in an Orange store or over the phone. You cannot do the same thing in a third party dealer (such as P4U or carphone warehouse), there you have to wait until the end of the contract.

True, done this a few times now.

I think they add the remaining time on to your new period though?

Yes, that's how these work. It is an early upgrade (ie sign up and get your new phone before the end of contract) not a cancellation of your previous contract and replacement with a new one.
