i have been thinking about upgrading my system from
q6600
evga 680 sli
8 gigs of ram @ 800mz
hd 5870

You'd be better off going for an i5 3570K, and a Z77 board as these are newer.

For gaming, is this? If so, 8GB of RAM is plenty. No problem with 16GB though if you want, just get low profile to keep out the way of the cooler.

With a cheaper PSU/motherboard you can afford a GTX670
