At the mo my PC is....

i7 860 Lynnfield overclocked 2.80Ghz overclocked to 3.4Ghz
Asus P7P55D-E LX Motherboard
4 GB (2x2) DDR3 667Mhz Corsair (7F7F9E0000000000)
Asus Radeon 5850 Direct CU 1GB

It's 4 1/2 years old and I'm guessing I need to upgrade if I'd like to use a more mondern screen ideally something like a 4k screen for gaming.

Could anyone recommend an upgrade path please?

Am I right in thinking the processor and motherboard are ok and I should focus on upgrading the RAM & GFX card?

If so I'd got in mind....

Avexir Core Blue Series 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz
Asus Radeon R9 290 DirectCU II OC 4096MB.

Could anyone confirm what I've said is ok or if not recommend an upgrade path please.

Thanks

get a 1440p monitor instead
and 8gb is fine for gaming

if you haven't got an ssd, get one too

i'd rather get the XFX 290 that's on offer or a 780 at the ~£200 gpu price bracket

You need two R9 290/290X for 4K gaming minimum.

Or a R9 295X2.

A single card will not game at 4K.

Do you have a suitable PSU for a upgrade?

Thanks for the replies

No not got a SSD, mine is a SAMSUNG HD103SJ 1TB. Don't know much about SSDs is it just a case of using one for really fast loading times and not having as much storage space?

Can you recommend a 1440p gaming monitor please? At the moment I've got a Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW 24-inch which must be at least 9 years old:o

Crikey! think 4K gaming will have to wait.

Not sure what the PSU is at the mo I'll have a butchers when I go home on dinner break.

yea fast loading times and makes your rig feel really snappy and nice to use.
once you go ssd, you'll never go back.

the samsung 1440p PLS screen for £300 is the screen to get.

You could also go for a 144Hz gaming monitor, or like others said a 1440p - i don't think you can go wrong with this 1440p monitor for this price - also included is a 144Hz benQ 27" which seems decent

YOUR BASKET
1 x BenQ XL2720Z 27" TRUE 144Hz 3D Vision 2.0 Widescreen LED Monitor - Black/Red £349.99
1 x Samsung S27A850TS 27" Widescreen Ultra Thin LED Professional PLS Monitor - Matte Black £299.99
Total : £664.98 (includes shipping : £12.50).

For me I'd go 1440p as I can't really tell a massive difference with a 144Hz screen, you may be different :)

EDIT: Funnily enough that 144Hz monitor just dropped in price! lol

I've already got a (albeit very old) 24" screen so Ideally I'd like to get a one that's a bit bigger.

My PSU is a Corsair TX750w

With regards to the offers, it probably won't be until after crimbo that I upgrade, just trying to get a feel as to what direction to take before I start making purchases.

Ah ok

I think you're best bet is 27" 1440p then, 1080p is probably a bit "blocky" at 27", 1440p I reckon would fit just right - hopefully you should be able to get some good deals like these after christmas!

See what prices are like though, new cards may come out etc - quite a long time still!
