Hi, new to the forum. I have a compaq presario s5500uk which has a 250W power supply. I have just bought a graphics card (radeon ati powercolour x800 xt platinum edition) that needs at least 300W.

Most power supplys aren't compatable for some some reason (think compaq make thoir own just to be awekward)

Is my beat option one of these new booster x3's - http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews.php?type=3&id=79&page=1&desc=fsp_booster_x3_300w_12v_psu

Or can I get a power supply from somewhere that will work? I would ideally like to have a 450W suplly but even 300W supply should be cheaper than the x3 thingy (or would the booster x3 work a lot better?)

Thanks for any advice (and sorry if this has already been asked but searched and couldn't find anything on this topic), cheers, Dan.

what cpu are you running, I have a compaq uses an oblong type power supply..., I take it that it does not have a standard atx motherboard?, if it does then just get a new case the Antec NSK4400 is £55 and has a 380Watt PSU..not sure where to get compaq PSU's from, but the current case/PSU might not have sufficient cooling...

Cheers for the reply. I have an amd athalon xp 3000+, the case has a fan and there is another on ontop of the cpu so the cooling should be ok, the graphics card I have has it's onwn heat sink with fan so should be ok.
I bought a 400W power supply from pc world, but it didn't work (the lights came on the went out and that was it) - took it to a place and they told me that compaq make their own power supplys and they wire them into the motherboard differently (or something similar), that makes sense to me cos my computer wouldn't even boot up and once I put the standard power supply in it works fine.

COMPETITOR

Thanks, Dan.
