Hi I'm currently running an I7-920 is there an actual practical upgrade path using my current board Gigabyte UD-5 and skt type or am I going to have to save up more pennies and do a whole new build ?

You're going to have to save up for a new motherboard.

I would wait for Haswell anyway, Sandybridge and Ivybridge won't benefit you that much from your 920 if it's overclocked. It's best to wait for 2 whole tick-tock cycles before upgrading.

Agree with the guys above, got an i7 930 and an i7 920 rig, both oc'd to 4ghz. The gains from "upgrading" to the newer cpu's are too small to warrant the price of changing.
