Upgrade question (MB and CPU)

Hi,
I'm looking to upgrade my gaming PC, which I bought from you and built in 2016.
(I also upgraded my graphics card a couple of years ago and bought a second SSD).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Here's what I currently have:
  • Samsung 250GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-75E250B/EU)
  • Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor - OEM
  • Corsair Builder Series CX 750W V2 '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020015-UK)
  • Asus Z170 Pro Gaming Intel Z170 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard
  • Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMD16GX4M2B3200C
  • Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler
  • LG WH14NS40 Blu-ray Writer Optical Drive 14X BDR
  • Aerocool Vs-92 Black Edition Midi-Tower - Black
  • MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Super Ventus XS OC 8192MB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card

I want to upgrade my motherboard and CPU.
I have my eye on this:
  • Asus ROG Strix B760-G Gaming WIFI D4 (LGA 1700) DDR4 Micro-ATX Motherboard
  • Intel Core i7-13700K (Raptor Lake) Socket LGA1700 Processor - Retail

I play VR games with an Oculus Rift-S.
Would there be any issues building a PC with this MB and CPU and my other existing components?

I figure DDR4 RAM is fine. I may upgrade my 16GB to 32GB. Could you also suggest a suitable 16GB RAM upgrade please?

I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the different makes and types!
I'd be very grateful for any advice you have.

Thank you,
Nick

No issues apart from needing a new CPU cooler take a look at the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120se.

If your not overclocking you could drop the CPU to a 13700/13700f

As for memory I would buy 2x16gb 3600mhz and sell your existing rather adding different memory

The board is compatible with the CPU (except you can't overclock a K-CPU in a B board), but it's rather expensive, you can buy a DDR5 board for that price (e.g. Gigabyte B760 Gaming X DDR5).

I'd consider something like the B760 DS3H instead, if I planned to stay with DDR4. What features do you need the board to have?

The upgrade to 32GB: the safest option is what mickyflinn suggested, but in theory you could either: buy another 16GB kit, or buy a 16GB stick (and move both 8GB sticks to a single channel). I've done all three and they all worked fine, but that's no guarantee.

PSU: a lot of boards have twin 8 pin EPS, or an 8 pin EPS and a 4 pin +12v. You don't necessarily need both, since most boards will boot with only one, but it is something to be aware of, since I don't think your PSU has enough connectors?

Other than general use, I use an Oculus Rift-S for VR gaming so would need Display Port + USB 3 for that. Also 3x USB 2 for keyboard, mouse and joystick.
Ethernet port also required for wired connection.
I'll buy another SSD for the OS (probably a card one) and will also connect my 2 existing SSDs (standard SATA connections).

I'm considering going for a DDR5 motherboard.
I've found these:
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/giga...-lga-1700-ddr5-atx-motherboard-mb-5bs-gi.html [no ethernet port]
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/giga...ntel-z690-ddr5-atx-motherboard-mb-5a4-gi.html [no ethernet port]
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...-lga-1700-ddr5-atx-motherboard-mb-37b-ms.html [no ethernet port]
3 of them don't have an ethernet port, which leaves 3.
Would you suggest any in particular?

I won't be overclocking, so I'll drop from the K to the KF:
(The F isn't in stock).

Thanks for your help :)

I'll have a look for memory and cooler now.

This runs at 6000MHz:
(perhaps a bit of overkill)

I've not been able to find Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120se on overclockers.
Are there any here that would do the job perfectly? Thanks.

How does this look?

Which just leaves the cooler. I'd be grateful for any suggestion.
Would "Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120se" be perfectly sufficient for the above?

Thanks,
Nick

So you need:
1. USB 3 port (Type C or Type A?) and 3 USB 2 compatible ports?
2. LAN.
3. 1 M.2.
4. 2 SATA ports.

Pretty much any board has those features, even H610.

3 of them don't have an ethernet port, which leaves 3.

They do. All 3 have an ethernet port.

The KF still allows overclocking (with a Z690/Z790 board), the F only relates to the IGP (or the lack of it). I would prefer the non-F, but I don't think OCUK sell it yet.

Yes. In the review on THG I think they tested with a 12900K.

How does this look?

The board is really expensive and the price seems hard to justify, given the features.

Is the RAM on the board's QVL? It appears to be AMD Expo/Ryzen tuned, according to the description?

If it was me, I'd swap the PSU for MSI's ATX 3.0 model: A850G, but your graphics card doesn't need a 12/16 pin.

Suggested changes:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £907.94 (includes delivery: £7.99)

In-stock @ OCUK only:

A tough one - DDR5 - to be or not to be!

Can you suggest an in-stock combination for DDR5 please? (with memory that's on QVL list for MB - just looked that up - very important!)

Thanks guys - I really appreciate the help!

I deliberately didn't suggest one, because paying over £200 for a B board makes me barf.

Done!
I really appreciate the help you guys have given me :)

Here's what I've gone for:
(Plus the cooler you recommended).

Christmas is coming early!
My old PC hasn't done badly - I've had it since 2016.

Thanks again,
Nick
