I'm currently on an 18 month contract (orange dolphin £35) and was just wondering at the end of my contract, can I upgrade and get a new phone and then leave soon after that or will they opt me into a set contract for a certain period of time if I get a new phone from them?

frakker is right, although you sometimes get lucky.
Orange called me up about 1 month before my contract ended to tell me they wanted to offer me a better deal, new phone for free and a cheaper contract with more benefits.
Just let them know you're thinking about changing at the end of the contract and see what happens.
