Hi all!
I currently have an i5 750 with an asrock p55 pro motherboard and it started giving me trouble. so i want to change my setup.. Looking into whats available today gave me a headache. Looking at whats there, i gather that the 2011 platform is the most future proof regarding new cpus coming out but that it is also the most expensive one (motherboards lots more expensive). While 1155 is still great but it wont be supported that much.

I am looking into buying an i7, not the most expensive one with a budget or a bit more expensive than budget motherboard and probably either 8gb or 16gb of ram. I am a web developer, mainly have lots of apps open at the same time, lots of mutitasking, some rare video encoding and lots of video decoding etc. What are your thoughts on my choice of platform? which one should i get? I honestly cannot be sure if i will ever upgrade anything (given that my i5 is 3 years old and now that i need to change something i will change them all at once) but for £100 difference in price i might consider the more expensive platform just to be safe in the long run. All i need is usb3, sata3 and all the normal bells and whistles, NO overclocking at all, no interested in that! :) Just a stable, fast system with a motherboard that doesnt suck. My asrock p55 pro has always given me small trouble every now and then.

thanks so much for the replies guys!
That was what i was thinking.

I already have a 256gb vertex 4.. so its gonna fly! ;)

as for memory, i would probably go for this

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-053-PA&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=813

as i wont overclock.. :D

also i will probably get the oem version cause i already have a pretty good cooler, although i do not know if its compatible, its the hyper 212 plus or evo from coolermaster.. if thats not enough i ll get something better but it cools off my i5 greatly!

You pay the extra on the retail version is not just for the stock cooler, but the 2 years extra warranty.

As for your existing cooler, if it is compatable with 1156, then it is compatable with 1155 as the mount holes are the same.

thanks for the clarification on the warranty!

my only other question has to do with the differences between the 3770 3.4ghz vs the 3.5 ghz one. Is it just speed?
Looking at the graphic in this page http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1914/17/ it looks as if the 3.4 one has some stuff the 3.5 doesnt? i mean the checkboxes in the graphic..

Thats my last question before i go through the shopping basket!!
