Currently have the following spec:

Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz
Corsair 12GB (6x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz XMS3 Triple Channel i7 Memory Kit CL9 1.6V
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5970 2048MB GDDR5 Graphics Card
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R

I want to make an upgrade to this, but without having to replace the motherboard and re-install Windows etc.

Reason be BF3 is lagging somewhat at 1920x1200 res at High settings.

What would change first? Money not really an issue at this stage. Just want to know options.

Overclock the 930 to start with, get a decent air cooler if you don`t already have one. Then get a new Gpu, 7950 for example, depending on budget.

lol a 7950 would be a downgrade rather than an upgrade..

I think a new cpu+mobo is what's required here but a new mobo usually requires a re-install of Windows, you could try it though by uninstalling current drivers somehow then putting in the new board.

Another option could be to OC your current chip if you haven't already

What an idiot, I read 5870. :o
Time for a new eyetest, me thinks. :D

The stuff you have is still pretty decent, and doesn't really need a bump just yet. You can always wait a bit and switch the next gen of GPU's (8000 series and 700 series) and CPU (Haswell), that's what most people will be doing around now.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/587?vs=550 huh seems amds 7950 is worse...how could they make a worse top end GPU or is it just due to the fact that 5970 has 2 gpu cores like the new 7990. since that is the case get overclock and get a haswell when they come out or get a 3770k and mobo and that will keep you good for another 2-3 years then upgrade the GPU when better ones are released

Ok cool. Is there anyway of rebuilding a PC but without having to reinstall all files, software etc.

Strange though that BF3 FPS drop to 40s on high settings.
