Hello all,

Quick question. System specs are as in my sig. I tried playing "The Dark Knight" on 1080p last night and is was quite stuttery. I wasn't running anything else in the background. I tried different media players and the same occurred. I've had my system for 2.5 years and I thought it was still up to the job of playing 1080p movies (files rather than bluray) but I'm starting to think that it may be upgrade time.

Thoughts?

Many thanks.

I'm not familiar with your current GPU however upgrading to a newer model, the ATI 4850 HD range would be my first choice, they have hardware support for playing high definition movies.

I would have thought that your rig would play HD movies OK...

What software and codecs are you using?

I'd go with it being a software realted problem, the spec in your sig should handle playing HD movies. You might have to download an update. I know I had to do this with my powerdvd pro to get it to play blu-ray.

I don't think it's software. I run both Vista and XP. For Vista I'm running the latest vista codec pack (using ffdshow for x264 files) and in XP I'm using the latest Matroska codec pack.

Ok, so it seems that a 9gb 1080p x264 file works fine without any hitches. However, any files which are 11gb and over and full screen are the ones which seem to stutter. To me this sounds like hardware.

Thanks for the advice so far.
