Hey guys

I currently own a sapphire tri x 290(non x) and its ok, and i have a 1440p monitor, so what do you think is it about stepping up on 970/980 or is about waiting to see what amd brings to the plate or the counter attack from nvid.
Appreciate your advice.

The 290 is faster as I just moved from a 290 Tri-X to a 970...

But I just love Nvidia DSR mode though so it was worth the swap for me just for that, also using around ~250w less power when running 3dmark too!

if your unhappy with the 290 then yeah of course its worth it, i would wait though as i dont see any point in swapping a 290 for a 970 or a 980 unless you just want a new toy to play with or are interested in benchmarking.

if your 290 plays everything u want, wait till amd releases their high end cards. if it doesn't then u could go for another 290 for crossfire so you'll see a bigger boost.

Good advice guys, im thinking along the same lines, whats attractive is the low tdp and the new features, at the moment i got that urge but at the same time waiting might be the one.
I just recently returned back my other tri x, although it was a beast in xfire it was just to much of a hot tempered and hungry one.

Nope. Is not an upgrade is just waste of money. Hold to the 290.

250 Watts!!! That's a fair chunk of power saving. It would cost me £21.06 more to run the 290 ove rthe 970 for a year with 2 hours a day gaming :D Ive been looking at the 290's but didn't realise they take that much more power than the 970's. That's put me right off.

Unless you want Nvidia specific tech, stick with the 290, up here it gets cold in winter so need something to offset the gas heating :)

No dude it's 250w... Don't link me to articles with stock clocked cards as mine was not stock.

you never said that was based on when your cards are overclocked them. you just said the 970 uses ~250w less power

also mate when someone is asking should they upgrade to xxx gpu, the information should be based on sock clocks unless the OP says they planning to overclock.

As I said the 970 uses less power then my 290 and that is true...

Comparing stock clocks is pointless as the only cards that ship with stock clocks is reference cards.

Most cards have overclocks from the factory so comparing stock clocks is completely and utterly pointles.

ok i know the only cards that ship with stock clocks is reference cards and is pointless once the factory OC cards are out

but theres many factory overclocked versions of the same card from both amd/NV some have light OC's others have heavy OC's so the result will not be the same for all.

tbh i didn't look your sig hence why i thought you was referring to a normal 970.

sorry
