Upgrade some parts or build new?

So my system is a good few years old now and it runs fine, my quandary is do I build new or buy some new parts and upgrade what I've got.

If you have the budget, absolutely build new. The i5 is completely outdated, and a 2nd hand i7 for that socket a) costs almost the same as a new superior Ryzen and b) is still old tech that will only age worse in the next year or two.

If budget is tight, personally I would rather a Ryzen 2600/3600 + 16GB 3200Mhz with a GTX970, than say, an i5-4590 with a 5600XT. At least you can still play at 60fps with the 970 at lowered settings, the i5 though will choke on a lot of new games.
