So currently I have a -

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5850
Asus M5A97 EVO AMD 990X (Socket AM3+)
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955be
4 gigs of ram
PC Power & Cooling Silencer Mk III Series 600W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply

All in a Cooler Master Elite 430 Case.

Now I'm thinking of doing quite a substantial upgrade my current basket looks like.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Powercolor Radeon R9 280X TurboDUO 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £209.99
1 x Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - OEM £159.95
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLD316G2133HC11ADC01) £119.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97P-D3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £69.95
1 x Raijintek Themis Direct Contact CPU Cooler £19.99
1 x Antec TrueQuiet 120 120mm Case Fan £7.99
Total : £597.46 (includes shipping : £8.00).

From what I can see it should be all compatible, just wondering what you think before I go ahead. Any obvious things I've missed?

I don't see any point in switching to Intel, just grab yourself a better CPU such as the FX8320 along with the other parts and you're ready to go. You already have a decent AMD motherboard.

I was thinking that briefly, but I think for gaming Intel normally comes out on top so I was thinking of jumping ship.

So my current ram is
Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit

If I go with amd what would it be worth upgrading the whole lot for faster speed? or just go with more ram?

So new basket looks like.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Powercolor Radeon R9 280X TurboDUO 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £209.99
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8350 Black Edition 4.00GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £131.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX) £59.99
1 x Antec TrueQuiet 120 120mm Case Fan £7.99
Total : £409.96 (includes shipping : ).

That will give me a total of 12 gigs of ram which should do nicely, also forgot to mention I have a gelid tranquilo cpu cooler which should be fine to use with the amd chip.

You are not going to be missing out on that big a performance hit. You may not even notice it. You have a decent motherboard already and it will take a 8320 or 8350 with bios 1006. That will give you a boost over what you have now and will cost you less than £110 (8320) compared to £280 to switch to Intel. Get a decent cooler to clock the 8320 to 4.5Ghz along with the new gpu and another 4gb of ram and you will have a decent performance boost.

Yeah the case fan is just to replace one of the front which is very slowly and loudly dying so anything will do really :)
