budget of £600 trying to decide between 5820k and 6700k, dont really have a clue on the motherboards and the reason i have gone for the noctua cooler is for as quiet as possible in my 330r case as its in the living room. Could i use a cheaper mobo on the 6700k or have i pot luck picked a decent one for the price?

parts being re used are :-
2x 120gb ssds and 1x 1tb HDD
1x EVGA 980 ACX
550w corsair psu
330r corsair case

i'm swayed to the 6700k as it comes under budget, but i have seen this bundle
My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £575.41
(includes shipping: £10.50)
but i dont know much about the cooler and in my head im thinking the 3200mhz ram must be better.... probably not!

Additionally,

X99 prefers quad channel RAM so a kit of 4 sticks.

Going from 2666/2800 to 3000MHz+ there isnt the biggest gain in realworld scenarios.

The cooler is too tall for your case,

http://www.corsair.com/en-gb/carbide-series-330r-quiet-mid-tower-case

Maximum CPU Cooler Height 160mm

http://noctua.at/en/nh-d15s/specification

Height (with fan) 165 mm

This fits,

Its £531 with free shipping.

Depends what you are using it for? Gaming, I would say keep the 2500k, overclock it if you have not already, sell 980 and get a 980Ti.

Also maybe sell the PSU and get an 850watt to there are no issues overclocing the cpu and psu

Unfortunately my mobo is a cheapo jobby And not the right chipset to overclock. I got at the time and can't overclock or I would up the 2500k :(

Use the pc solely for gaming, my father has a 5820 overclocked and a 980 and the difference on some games in frames is pretty good (bear in mind I'm on stock and he's 4.4)

Like the look of that stulid, anyone know how the cooler is for noise?
Also for £10 more surely I may as well get the 3200 corsair ram even if it doesn't make much difference?

And thank you for saving me the embarrassment of the cooler height! Kit guru and corsair forums said 170mm so I presumed it was ok

The cooler is excellent for noise, I used one in a friend's PC build along with a NZXT H440 and MSI R9 380.

A quiet setup overall.

As for the ram, it's not going to be worse having the faster stuff.

For gaming you could just buy a second hand Z77 board and overclock the 2500k instead then. Z77 boards have went up in price but it would still cost you a fraction of the price of your current plan with essentially the same end result.

Agreed. Just buy a Z77 board and save the money - or put it towards a faster graphics card. Spending £500-600 on a new bundle seems daft.

Yes but as OP wants a gaming machine I would expect a much bigger increase going from GTX 980 > GTX 980Ti and finding a cheap 2nd hand motherboard to overclock the 2500k. It would also be cheaper

Looking around and 2nd hand z77s go for circa £100.

i still think ill move to a new platform,

at the moment its between

and

would prefer x99 but seems may be more costly, but my dad does have a pair of the cheap 2400 team group (2x 4gb) spare so can use quad....

maybe i need to settle for the matterhorn cooler and not this noctua one as that bundled with 16gb is £10 cheaper. Hate having many choices!

bonus is paid last day of the month so have 5 days to decide and order the 31st!

i got my tape measure out and have 163mm from mobo to side panel, this Noctua DH14 one is 160mm. Maybe im just being fussy and should half the cooler cost with the materhorn or even materhorn pure for 29.99 as im not going to be looking at it so aesthetics are not an issue.

yes he got the team group 2 x 4gb cheap to get him going then upped to quad channel 3200mhz corsair ram. So the team group 2400 is sat idle and even though im 27 im still "borrowing" bits from my dad... i did buy him a gsync monitor for xmas mind!

Bequiet do some nice coolers that are all black, maybe one of those is 160mm.

The case has a window right?

i went from a 2600k to a 5820k with the gigabyte sli mobo last Autumn as i always want my cpu upgrades to last at least 6 years

Can't rate it enough, but i did have problems with overclocking the memory as it was unsupported.

also if you go with a 6core haswell, get it watercooled as they love to pump out heat

sold it right there!

so

or

above for the 6700k route

or for the 5820k route

my dads vote is as follows, then use his 8gb of the same ram also.
This cheap board doesnt get bad reviews at all, negative is i wont be albe to sli (i have no intention on doing so)
